Drumming and the written word. They're essentially the same thing. They both live in the realm of pulse and flow. I'm inspired to do both as they relate to my relationship to God. It is inconsequential how I drum or what I write, only that I do them to honor Him who endows me with the ability to do both.
Music
Coltrane, Chick Corea, any virtuoso composer or musician who had great skills and used them to make music for the broad masses. (And quite often, masses of broads) Drummers: Tony, Elvin, Vinnie, Gadd, Omar Hakim, Gary Husband, Rick Marotta, Bernard Purdie, Keith Carlock, many, many others.
Movies
Anything with a good story and likable characters. Can never go wrong with a Coen brothers movie.
Television
Lost. Lost. And more Lost. Love the Simpsons. Recently started watching Weeds.
Books
I've got a big library of theology books I'm sure no one is interested in. Perhaps you're wanting to know I think Douglass Coupland has the most beautiful, fluid writing style of my generation. Or that I'm influenced by libertarian thinkers without actually becoming a "big L" Libertarian.
Heroes
Assuming we're discussing mere mortals in recent American history: Vinnie Colaiuta; Paul "Bear" Bryant; Steven Yates; John Wimber. I'm probably not giving someone important the credit they're due. Walking out the life and ministry of Jesus continues to be my driving force.

I'm an online journalism professional in the East Valley of Greater Phoenix. I'm married to a beautiful, wonderful woman, Jessica, who tolerates my obsession with drums. Read my daily blog at matt.mattandjess.com.
Who I'd like to meet: I'd love to have a venti coffee with Douglass Coupland, just to find out if he speaks like he writes.
Happy Birthday a day late Matt. It was great to see ya the other day. I'm still in Phoenix. Heading back to OC tomorrow morning. If you are around tonight and want to chill some, look me up Brotha!

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the support and friendship! If you haven't already, please go to our main site and subscribe via RSS or e-mail on the right hand side. We are around 200 subscribers right now, but our goal is to have 500+ by the end of this month. The more support we get this way, the more we can give back to the guitar and music community in form of exposing new talent, giveaways, and prizes. Thanks! I truly appreciate your help!
Thanks for sharing your wife with us for these last couple weeks... I really appreciate it and have enjoyed the time we had together. Hopefully next time you can come or we can travel that way and see you too. :0)
Dude.. start with a dw pedal.. set the throw all the way back extend the beater all the way out and tighten the spring all the way down.. then play a jazz samba at about 80 bpm for a half an hour at a time and articulate each stroke. Accenting the second stroke of each pair.. With both feet... It'll feel like shin splints for a while but that would be a great start... I got a couple other excercizes that might help.. sorry it took me so long to get back to you .. For you the key is your right hand but for the rest of the band it is your right foot.. It must be solid and deliberat and unquestionable..Sorry it took so long for me to respond..
