If the world is fast becoming a melting pot of cultures, then Matt Stern is a musician for the new world. A native Montrealer, Matt brings a broad spectrum of cultural influences into his original folk-pop style. He has performed in Japan, China and Nicaragua and incorporates several languages into his music. Most independent artists begin their careers in their hometown. For Matt, the world is his stage.
Matt’s musical career began with an EP and the realization that he had to do things his way.. with a little help from his friends. From this ideology came Songs for the Wandering Spirit, his first full-length album. On Songs, Matt sings his folk-based, pop-melodic insightful tunes in English, French and Spanish, with clever hints of jazz, blues, and soul thrown into the mix. Many of Matt's musical friends lend their talents to Songs, giving the album a sense of intimate warmth and cultural diversity. Tunes from Songs have appeared on radio stations and podcasts across Canada, as well as in the US, Japan, Poland and Hungary. Mike Gowing of CIBL Radio Montreal has made the bold prediction that Matt will one day win a Juno.
A popular live artist in his hometown with sold-out shows and an appearance on Global Television, Matt recently traveled to Japan for three months of musical exploration and touring. He shared the stage and studio time with Tokyo musicians Be The Voice, a seasoned pop duo with a loyal following in Japan and Korea. Matt's return to Canada sparks the next step in the evolution of his career. What’s next? There have been rumours of new songs (in Japanese?!), fresh collaborations and a newfound resolve to dive deeper into the world of music.
Dans un monde qui se transforme rapidement en un véritable mélange de cultures, Matt Stern se taille une place. Montréalais d’origine, Matt fait preuve d’une grande curiosité culturelle. Il compte à son actif des concerts au Japon, en Chine et au Nicaragua et il chante dans plusieurs langues. Tandis que la plupart des artistes indépendants débutent leur carrière dans leur ville natale, Matt s’efforce de partager sa musique aux quatre coins du monde.
La carrière de Matt a reçu son coup d’envoi avec l’enregistrement d’un EP, après lequel il a pris conscience qu’il devait prendre son avenir musical en main. C’est ainsi qu’a vu le jour Songs for the Wandering Spirit, un album issu de cette volonté. L’album, qui comporte des chansons pop-folk chantées en anglais, en français et en espagnol, comprend également des clins d’œil à d’autres traditions musicales, tels le jazz, le soul, le blues et la musique du monde. Plusieurs amis de Matt figurent sur l’album en tant que collaborateurs, ce qui contribue à y créer une ambiance amicale et bigarrée. Songs a déjà été diffusé sur les ondes au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Grande-Bretagne, au Japon, en Pologne et en Hongrie. Mike Gowing, annonceur à CIBL Montréal, a prophétisé dans son émission que Matt gagnerait un jour un Juno.
Artiste populaire dans sa ville natale, Matt a déjà passé à Global Television et a récemment entrepris une tournée de trois mois au Japon. C’est là-bas qu’il a fait la connaissance d’un duo japonais appelé Be the Voice, avec qui il a partagé la scène à plusieurs reprises.
Le retour de Matt au Canada marque la prochaine étape dans l’évolution de sa carrière musicale. Où cela le mènera-t-il? Il y a des rumeurs qui circulent à propos de nouvelles compositions en français et en japonais ainsi que de nouvelles collaborations. Il est, semble-t-il, fermement résolu à poursuivre son chemin dans le monde de la musique.
