Frogwomen’s last album is just water under the bridge and only the disrespectful de large could encourage him to create a new one… it is a one-song record which symbolically lasts 66. 6 minutes. Satan worshipping and overused topic in pop music is just the straw that allowed the struggle between the two artists to begin: a patchwork of microsongs in which each one of them tries to annihilate the other’s style, a record that ranges between love ditties, doom-noise cants, and irreverent & wild tarantellas (ehm.... maybe i’m overstating now). .
THIS FRIDAY LIVE AT MARY'S PLACE (9:30PM): Eastern Blok
Eastern Blok is a pan-cultural ensemble with a sound that combines jazz and classical music with the leaping rhythms and distinctive tonal palette of Balkan music. The unusual music created is really nothing like anything on the planet. Touring heavily in Europe and in the states, this Chicago-based band has forged a reputation for giving incredible live performances. Serbian guitar virtuoso, Goran Ivanovic, and the members of the group have a diverse and experienced background making them some of the heaviest cats to ever appear on the Mary's live scene!
Serbian guitar virtuoso, Goran Ivanovic, recently was awarded Album of the Year in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and he was declared Artist of the Year by WCVF-FM. The band's charismatic drummer, Michael Caskey, has worked with flugelhorn legend, Chuck Mangione. Rockford native, Mathew Ulery, is ferocious on bass, and saxophonist, Doug Rosenberg, works tirelessly to put everything he has in to every live performance! Eastern Blok's past appearances on the Mary's live scene have been absolutely astonishing!
The LA Times had this to say about the group: "Restlessly innovative work."
Jazz critic for the monthly web-zine, All About Jazz, Budd Kopman said this about Eastern Blok:
"This sound is a mix of Balkan folk music and some Klezmer, with the jazz aesthetic of improvisation wrapped in an impossibly high-energy drive that also brings in very heavy bass lines. The pulse moves relentlessly forward, always given a kick by the odd meter, odd phrase length or out of phase repeated note groupings. The effect is mesmerizing, the bass and drums acting as one to viscerally push the listener this way and that."
Enjoy world class live music at Rockford's oldest bar!
