Born and raised in West Texas and currently living in NYC, Matt Hinkley is a hybrid professional musician in the truest sense of the word. A multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and conductor/music director, Matt has not only established himself as a presence on the rock 'n' roll circuit - he is also making a name for himself as one of the premier guitarists and music directors/conductors on the New York theater scene.
From his days rocking to Billy Idol as a four-year-old in Scooby Doo underwear, to his schooldays playing in and fronting various rock and punk bands, to acting both in school and professionally, to subsequently writing his own music and lending his multiple talents to other writers, composers, and artists, Matt has always had enormous passion for both music and theater. Today, he continues to find creative ways to incorporate both into his professional artistic life.
On the rock 'n' roll front...
Hinkley's self-titled debut album is an original and refreshing collection of twelve infectious songs ranging from acoustic Americana to full-bore rock ‘n’ roll. His music draws comparisons to Wilco, The Beatles, and Ryan Adams while retaining a unique character all its own. Hinkley supports his studio effort with a vigorous live show- his record release show to a capacity crowd at NYC’s historic Bitter End was said to have rocked the venue as hard as it had been in twenty years.
Hinkley's songwriting is influenced musically by the country, blues, and folk of Texas, combined with the straight-up, explosive rock 'n' roll he was weaned on, and the tight songwriting style of classic artists like the Beatles. Lyrically, it's all about the decisions, events, and journeys that make up one's life, as well as the process of coming to terms with the fact that "when you reach that line, you cross that line on your own."
Hinkley has made music with numerous other pop and rock artists in both live and recorded settings, including Craig Wilson, Sharon Kenny, Joe Moore, Mat Leland, Amanda Droste, and Billy McGuigan. Matt has also acted as guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist and music director for Prefab4, a non-impersonating Beatles tribute that has played nationwide. His musical efforts have led him to perform across the country and at such NYC venues as Joe’s Pub, The Bitter End, Cutting Room, Crash Mansion, Ars Nova, Mo Pitkins, Pianos, Lion’s Den, and more.
In the theater world...
Matt most recently was the resident music director and conductor/guitarist for Paul Scott Goodman's Rooms off-Broadway at New World Stages. Matt currently works as the guitarist for The Burnt Part Boys as well as MD for Goodman's upcoming new musical Easterhouse. Matt also has an extremely close and gratifying working relationship with Kleban and Jonathan Larson Award-winner Joe Iconis; he is a staple member of the Joe Iconis Rock 'n' Roll Jamboree (guitar, accordion, vocals), as seen on YouTube; he served as music director, arranger, rehearsal pianist, guitarist, and actor for SPF's production of Iconis's rock musical The Black Suits at the Public Theater; he has also acted as music director/supervisor for Iconis's ReWrite at Urban Stages, and for his critically acclaimed Things To Ruin at the Zipper Factory, in which he also performed as a singer in previous productions (Joe's Pub, Ars Nova). Other music directing credits include the Fringe Festival production of Green Eyes (MD, guitar), a reading of All Fall Down at the Dramatists Guild, and the national tour of Beehive (Asst. MD, guitar).
Matt also provides guitar, vocals, and other musical assistance to a host of other NYC-based theater writers and performers, including Mel Marvin, Sean Mahoney & Creighton Irons (Factory Girls), Ryan Scott Oliver (Alive At Ten), Bobby Cronin (Bratt Camp), 2007 Jonathan Larson Award winner Robert Maddock (Plastic!, and 2007 Nightlife Award Winner Lorinda Lisitza (Triumphant Baby: The Songs of Iconis and Maddock).

oh yeah, I love it. I actually found out about you through Joe Iconis, whom I am a huge fan of, and I saw your performance of Blue Hair and was like, hey, he has an amazing voice, and then I found you had your own music and was really excited.

They have pulled pork, mac & cheese and this really good batter fried-fish (yes, GOOD friend fish) on the buffet. It is fierce. It's only been 2 weeks and I can already feel my heart-failing. Wish me luck.
In the wake of Katrina, we know that Louisiana's coastal crisis means more than the loss of some redfish or blue crabs - it means the difference between a sustainable New Orleans and the next Atlantis - please keep spreading the word!
