Dormancy is one hell of a place to wait! It is deceptively inactive, yet underneath, creativity stirs. And sometimes, if you get the right mix of ingredients and patience; magic and movement stir together. Soon, cracks open up to let out what can no longer be contained. Finally, a breaking out occurs, and a rare sound is launched. And so goes the bio of Mattie McGrail and his upcoming debut CD, "The Long Road of Doris Voxy" to be mastered at Capitol Records Mastering Division by master engieer Evren Goknar. At the age of 22, Matt picked up an acoustic guitar after hearing melodic sounds rise from the basement of his Brighton, Massachusetts apartment. Unclear how to recapture a lost spirit, he tapped into a downstairs neighbor's guitar skills - took 10 lessons throughout a cold winter season and never looked back. By late spring he wandered into the world of open-mic folk, playing with the likes of some early 90's up-and-coming Boston musicians. It was during this time he practiced early writing and vocal attempts at venues such as the Cantab Lounge, John Harvard's Brewhouse, and Club Passim in Cambridge, and the Old Vienna Coffehouse and Cocoa Bean in Central Massachusetts. It was also at this time he was asked to join the stage with folk singer Bill Cud-dyer to, first learn, then perform percussion and backing vocals throughout the Greater Boston area. While attending graduate school for environmental studies in the mid-90's, Matt met up with Brooklyn musician Dan Strauss after conversing about the style and coolness of both Billy Bragg and Bruce Springsteen. For the next decade, this collaboration further inspired Matt to write his own rock songs while performing studio work with Dan on his first two albums. Yet his songs remained dormant as he struggled to blend music with work. Further musical inspiration quickly struck however when he was hired to join critically-acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns' Florentine Films production company in Walpole, New Hampshire on his epic Jazz series. Soon, it became evident that music had never left him, nor would it let him walk away so easily. The echoes of unfinished songs and a patient guitar continued to call him back. After working with Kaika Kale and The Quahaugs on his debut CD release in the Summer of 2006 (which includes the hauting tribute to Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans, "Weeds Amongst The Flowers") - and a six-month stint of teaching overseas in southern Brazil, Matt re-dedicated himself to his craft of shaping haunting sounds and soulful lyrics. His artistry had now fully awakened and he found the perfect venue at Fritz restaurant in Keene, New Hampshire to test his songs on Thursday night open-mics. Love won and lost and a continued exploration of the human condition drive his songs. Songs that do more than just hold a mirror to the listener; but ones that reach through and pull the listener into the facade to have a look for themselves. Matt is currently working with producer/engineer Enoch Jensen at EastLake Recording in Shelburne Falls, MA along with co-producer Andrew Anthem on a 10 song cd entitled, The Long Road of Doris Voxy to be released in the fall of 2009.
