Reading, writing, politics, photography, rambling the beach, thrift stores, Oregon history, old maps, sitting around burn barrels, talking about ideas, road trips with very little planning, community service, walking my dogs, watching birds but not identifying them, picking blackberries, living differently, avoiding cliches in life and speech, doing absolutely nothing and not being bored.

Books
They utterly dominate my home. I read about 150 books a year. My current favorite authors are Wendell Berry, W.G. Sebald, Rachel Carson, Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, Ivan Doig, and Jim Harrison. Always Thoreau. I like to alternate between novels and non fiction. I recently taught the Hesse novel Siddhartha for the first time. I hadn't read it since high school and rereading this book was a profound intellectual and spiritual experience. It helped me.
Heroes
Thoreau. Whitman. Gary Snyder. Ida Wells. Tom Paine. Gore Vidal. Upton Sinclair. Rachel Carson. Mark Twain. Harriet Tubman. John Muir. Vonnegut.
About me: My name is Matt Love and I'm a writer, teacher, and founder of Nestucca Spit Press,(www.nestuccaspitpress.com) an independent press publishing books about Oregon. I authored/edited the Beaver State Trilogy, Citadel of the Spirit: Oregon's Sesquicentennial Anthology.
I can claim the distinction of being the world's foremost authority on an obscure 1970 Oregon rock festival called Vortex I, Oregon's famous Beach Bill, Oregon Coast taverns (www.letitpour.net) the Portland Trail Blazers' 1976-77 championship season, the restoration of the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, hustling a book, blackberries in Oregon, wood tennis rackets, the filming of Sometimes a Great Notion, and the history of Nestucca Spit.
Some my other writing gigs include contributing columns to the Bear Deluxe, Oregon Coast Today, Pacific Northwest, and Oregonian.
I've been blogging on this site since Jan. 2007 and have posted a lot of material. These days I mostly write about Newport. It's a very rich subject.
Who I'd like to meet: People who care about other people and dig Oregon. People who don't suck on the endlessly flowing teat of popular culture. People who might be interested in getting back to the land. People who like to get up early in the morning and hit the beach and like it because no other humans are around. People who are not indifferent. People who exhibit passions.
Totally interpreted a new book as a new look. I say you might want want to consider it from a purely marketing point of view. But don't take my word for it it, definately check with some hot chicks first.
Hey Mr.Love!! Ok the moment we have ALL been waiting for!
The Road (movie) is going to be released Nov 25th. Just saw a comercial for it on the TV 2 minutes ago. I still haven't forgotten about it, lets make it happen!!
The previews for it look phenomonal! So lets get everyone together and do it!
This is the video I talked about so long ago that made me believe that Almost Famous was made about the Eagles. The beginning is why. When they are warming up.
I just got a unpaid writing job for CWG magazine but it does have a few perks so I wanted to thank you for helping me with my writing a long time ago when it was really evolving. Sorry about all those bad teenager poems you had to read. :P
Mr. Love, thanks for inspiring me to get out of bed in the mornings to go to school this last year. If it weren't for the insanity of your second period Honor's English class, I probably wouldn't have bothered. Also, thanks for helping me become a better author, and for reminding me that teachers are not heartless monsters who only care about letter grades. My passion for writing has been renewed, and who would have thought I would, but I have been keeping a journal, AND writing a novel just for fun! =) Can I swing by next school year and come visit to share my work with you?
