Matt began playing guitar and writing at age 15 in Westfield, NJ. In the mid 80’s, he formed a band called The Fundamentals. The band released one record on its own – “It’s A Big World” (POS), then signed an 8 record deal with MCA Records and released “Feeling Strange”. The following year, the band went into the studio with producer, David Leonard (Prince, John Mellencamp) and recorded songs for “Evolver”, only to later get dropped when Matsushita bought MCA.
Matt moved on to form The Gefkens – a power pop trio in the mid 90’s. The band signed a publishing deal with Largo Music and they built Think Tank Studio in Hoboken, NJ. The band also continued on their DIY label - POS Records and released three albums: “Grind”, “Live, Live, Live”, and “Heroes”.
In recent years, Matt has done quite a bit of recording, engineering, and production in his studio that he now shares with members of Sonic Youth. He has also written several songs for film and television, resulting in placements with HBO, Paramount, NBC and Focus Features.
