Since 1999 Matt Masters has been bringing southern Alberta country and western music to people all across Canada. He's the king of the marathon tour, making a national name for himself with his 2005 tour of Alberta performing 100 shows in 120 days, while driving almost 30,000 kilometers. 2008 saw Matt do a '30 shows in 30 days' tour of Calgary and also saw the launch of Matt's original country and western musical, Don Coyote. Don Coyote debuted in Toronto October 4th 2008 as part of the prestigious Nuit Blanche festival. In 2009 Matt became a regular feature at Calgary Flames games, performing in the Saddledome in front of 19,000 hockey fans. In June 2009 he toured Germany, England and Turkey to rave reviews. In September 2009 Matt acted in the film, "Western Confidenial," he played the role of Marty Waters, a rambling singer in the old west. Matt is also working on the soundtrack to the film. November 2009 has Matt performing with Barney Bentall's annual Grand Cariboo Opry in BC. February 2009 will see Matt return to the Middle East for the second time in a year, this time for a tour of Qatar. Matt will be travelling with the Gentlemen of the Rodeo and they will also tour Germany. The Matt Masters World Tour will conclude in Vancouver with a performance at Alberta House during the Olympics.
An original honky-tonker with a true connection to the Canadian west, Matt Masters is the real deal.
Review of Don Coyote from altcountry.nl 4 out of 5 stars
When Matt Masters opens his mouth, wolves stand paralyzed with fear. As the guitars bounce across the prairies, scorpions flee under rocks. Don Coyote(own label) is the story of a Calgary inhabitant who considers himself an old fashioned cowboy roaming through the city singing songs and writing wrongs. The Canadian Matt Masters presented Don Coyote as a kind of theatre piece with his six person band while the visual artist Terrance Houle, also a Calgarian, used video to provide the piece with the images. It was likely an interesting happening but more importantly, the result is nine beautiful songs on this CD (running nearly a half hour). Fans of Tom Russell should not hesitate to buy this album. Matt Masters has the same dark voice made for telling cowboy adventure stories. After Corb Lunds' Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier! this is another stellar album out of Canada full of cowboy romance. On the track Highways the company travels around the freeways of Los Angeles and Matt Masters doesn't pass for John Doe on that ride. Lungs full of air, red-faced and with a ton of power while the desert turf blows across the road. Delicious. The album Centennial Swell from 2006 is just as strong. available on CD baby.
"Don Coyote is a Must See" Toronto Star, NOW Magazine, Eye Weekly
"Masters weaves the well-written and well-delivered story in amongst a number of country songs backed by a full band... it is a new, original and entertaining work worth seeing. "
Tony Charon - Avenue Magazine Online
"A natural storyteller and an engaging performer"
The Prince Edward Island Guardian
"In a city that arbitririly claims the monkier of Cowtown, Matt Masters is what the city claims to be: an urban entity with an old country soul."
Swerve Magazine
"A local country legend in Calgary, he has become a key member of the Toronto alt-country scene while also touring nationally. His big deep voice has elicited Johnny Cash comparisons, while his clear passion for Canada recalls that of Stompin' Tom."
NXNE Program Guide
"Masters adds colour to tradition rather than just paying omage to it. For starters, he's got a voice that could melt a bitter drunk into oblivion before the first beer is down. He's a first class country crooner, with a golden throat and the kind of inviting glow that died with Dean Martin. Damn, the guy's one helluva charmer!"
Beatroute Magazine
"It was bright and calm, like a campfire. The room seemed altered by his performance, in the way one imagines a good sermon might awaken a church congregation."
Zack Pashak - Alberta Views Magazine
