Matt Nelson is a guitar virtuoso, multi-instrumentalist and troubadour based in Brisbane, Australia. Nelson delivers a high-impact and emotionally affecting performance which marries the complexities and fingerstyle of the great guitar maestros of old with modern folk, prog and pop sensibilities, to create an impressive body of work which is both intricate and approachable.
His live show will often entail almost violently exacted roots numbers, rollicking alt-folk ballads, sweet and melodic instrumental pieces, atmospheric ambience movements and a number of catchy ditties that often linger in the one's head long after the music has stopped.
Nelson attributes the key influences of his unique style to growing up in the Australian bush, an obsessive teenage adoration of 1990s heavy metal and a similar preoccupation with solo acoustic instrumentalists like Leo Kottke, Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins. The resulting mishmash is a flourishing acoustic sound-scape, mature beyond Nelson's 23 years, with a strong focus on melody, structure and impact.
Lyrically Matt draws on his own life and real-world observation to pen lyrics that have become imaginative, allegorical and disarmingly honest. They are often regarding issues such as death, love foibles, depression, drug (ab)use, humourous encounters or situations, and the pitfalls of adulthood in a fast-paced Western world.
Currently, Nelson is planning his debut album he hopes to release in the first half of 2009. With his bold production values and bevy of talented musicians from all over the planet in tow, the finished product should be quite exciting.
Nelson also fronts a band also based in Brisbane. Currently an exciting position exists for a replacement drummer. Queries can be directed to this myspace or direct to Nelson's management: polyomnipresence [at] gmail.com. Read the relevant blog for further information.
