My name is Matt Quinn, I am currently in my first year on the Folk & Traditional Music Degree course at Newcastle University.
My father, Dan is a well known singer and Melodeon player from Sussex. He is a resident at the Royal Oak Folk Club in Lewes. My mother, Rebe Cleveland was for many years one of the mainstays of the highly acclaimed Appalachian dance team, Broken Ankles.
As a solo musician I sing unacompanied traditional songs and tunes on Melodeon.
I am in a duo with Radio 2 Young Folk Award Finalist Dogan Mehmet. We sing and play Melodeons, Mandolin, Fiddle, Guitars. We will be performing under the title of MATT QUINN & DOGAN MEHMET.
I am also in Dogan's band called DOGAN AND THE DEERHUNTERS. In this band I will be singing backing vocals and playing Mandolin & Mandolin-Banjo. Also in this band (besides Dogan and myself) are Tom Redman (Bass, Backing Vox), Colin Nicholson (Piano Accordion, Backing Vox), Matthew Price (Guitar, Backing Vox) & Tom Wright (Drums, Backing Vox).
Another musical venture of mine, is a duo called THE MIGHTY QUINNS, which consists of me and Dan Quinn. Dan will be singing and playing Melodeons, I will be singing and playing Mandolin, Fiddle, Mandolin-Banjo and Mandocello. Together we sing and play traditional folk music.
HOT OFF THE PRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New Fiddle duo TOM MOORE & MATT QUINN. Matt and Tom play Traditional English & French-Canadian tunes. Coming soon to a venue (hopefully) near you.
ABOUT THE SONGS:
The Banks of Sweet Dundee: This song comes from the singing of Walter Pardon.
The Quarryman/Zuppa Inglese: The first one is a tune that i learnt by osmosis at sessions. The second is a weird tune written by Rees Wesson.
Young Emma: This is an american version of the popular ballad of Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low.
Fred Pigeon's No. 3/The Battle of the Nile: Fred Pigeon's No. 3 is a tune that isn't played much any more which is a shame because i think it's better than Fred Pigeon's 1 & 2. The Battle of the Nile comes from The Sussex Tune Book.
