Influences
Bob Marley, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, The Police, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Pearl Jam, 2pac, Bob Dylan, Howie Day, Cold Play, State Radio, John Butler Trio and countless others...
For Matt Shwachman, it is a search for melody, for motion, and for fulfillment of the mind. This search has forged by an acoustic guitar driven-blend of pop/rock which Skope Magazine states, "would impress fans of artists such as John Mayer, Tom Petty and Jason Mraz."
Although his artistic vision and style took years to take shape, Matt would taste success with his very first finished song. Although written years earlier, "Side of the Road" recently touched listeners across the country when it earned a spot on the hit TV series One Tree Hill.
Matt's new album, entitled Uncharted Territory, "is a journey about the process, not the end result," Matt says. "We are all ever-evolving, changing and growing people. It is this growth process that brings fulfillment, and in order to attain any sense of it, it must be earned." Matt has seen his music do well at college radio, with spins on over 150 stations. So much so, CMJ recently stated, "Acoustic-wielding, Boston-Based singer songwriter Matt Shwachman will be giving established heart-melters like One Republic and Five for Fighting a run for their money."
Matt has been earning his keep by hitting the pavement hard with his new band, cleverly titled the Matt Shwachman Band (MSB). MSB features Hugh Allen on bass, Mike Fiore on lead guitar and Dana Bonardi on percussion. MSB prides itself on being a very hardworking band, and they keep an active calendar to prove it. They have played arenas, headlined festivals, played colleges, universities, and schools, in addition to the top club venues in the North East. In addition to their busy calendar, MSB is currently in the recording studio working on their new CD, tentatively titled Are You Prepared, due out in 2010.

"Acoustic-wielding, Boston-Based singer songwriter Matt Shwachman will be giving established heart-melters like One Republic and Five For Fighting a run for their money when he performs a brief handful of East Coast dates this month and makes an appearance on the tri-state area's (Delaware, New Jersey, and Philly) The Tim Qualls Show." - CMJ (College Music Journal)
"Shwachman blends intelligent lyrics that really have something to say, with strong melodies and outstanding musicianship. Track 3, 'Rise Above' is a memorable, radio-friendly gem that would impress fans of artists such as John Mayer, Tom Petty and Jason Mraz." - Joseph Italiano (Skope Magazine)
"Sometimes beautiful, transcending songs are as simple as a man, a guitar, and a positive vision. Such is the case for Worcester-based Matt Shwachman, singer, songwriter and storyteller. On his latest release, Unchartered Territory, the songs glide effortlessly from track to track with tales of inspiration, love, and spirituality - all guided by Shwachman's acoustic guitar, melodic flair, and lyrics that resonate straight through to the soul. The one element that really stands out on Shwachman's CD is the ever-present positive energy and spirit intertwined with every song, inspiring the listener to make the most of all that life offers up." - The Pulse
"Wow, there is just too much good indie music out there. Add Matt Shwachman's Uncharted Territory to the list. Matt's voice is pure and his lyrics even more so. Uncharted Territory covers just that...the inner landscape and the journey through is done in a feel good, popish manner that doesn't bore. As a matter of fact it soars and swells with words and chords that should be bottled up and sold as an effective pick me up." - Unsigned the Magazine
"Between Matt Shwachman's soothing voice and its breezy, spiraling arrangement, 'Rise Above' is one of those songs that you only need to hear once to get it stuck in your noggin. That his words are quite uplifting is a bonus that makes 'Rise Above' a complete winner of a song." - A Taste of Triple A
"Singer-songwriter Matt Shwachman's sophomore effort sounds remarkably fresh and innovative in this, the eighth year of the artistically / culturally vapid / vacant decade of American Idol and Rock Star. Shwachman is obviously a student of classic pop song-craft (i.e. he can compose a melodic tune that grabs you in a simple verse/chorus) which is not as easy as it sounds. Let’s forget the '00s ever happened and start over with Uncharted Territory." - Amplifier Magazine
"Shwachman plays uplifting and occasionally angsty music that has earned him some television airplay on One Tree Hill." - The Boston Globe
"A very interesting, not easily defined style... it fits somewhere in the Seal to Peter Gabriel arena of pop that is a little more sophisticated than your average pop." - Taxi
"Lyrically, it glows, radiates introspection and invites you in to wonder." - DiscoveringArtists.com
"Great passionate rock that definitely comes from the heart!" - Derek Sivers (President, CD Baby)
"A strong debut from a new artist - check out Rise Above!" - TripleARadio.com
"Uncharted Territory is Shwachman's second album and features a dozen tracks of upbeat, acoustic-guitar-driven pop. Shwachman nicely stitched together philosophical themes with everyday imagery and dressed up the whole thing with band arrangements fleshed out by producer Andrew Gallagher." - Worcester Telegram & Gazette
"With his sound that's just this side of Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson, Shwachman is sure to become a college radio darling. He's got a pleasant tenor and a knack for sophisticated pop arrangements. His melodies sound effortless, a cocktail of acoustic guitar and smooth synth that cozies up to your ear, like on 'Rise Above,' a jaunty confection of a song with an irresistible hook and rhythm." - Shinbone Magazine
