While the Matt Stapp Band may be new to the Texas country scene, Matt Stapp certainly is not. After years of songwriting and performing in the Abilene area, Matt’s launch was fueled the summer of 2008, when he was named a finalist in The Ranch 95.9 Pickin’ Party.
The next few months found Matt’s acoustic act opening for Johnny Cooper, Jamie Richards, Bruce Robinson, Bleu Edmondson and many others. Each time he performed, someone would say, “You need to be playing with a full band!” Matt agreed, but growing up in Albany, Texas, deep in the heart of cattle and petroleum country, he also knew that not just any band would bring life to the stories he told in song.
A serendipitous encounter on the banks of the Brazos River in the summer of 2008 began a chain of events that brought the Matt Stapp Band into being.
With Jesse Guess on lead guitar, Josh Turnbow on bass, Martin McLemore on drums and Matt playing rhythm guitar and carrying the lead vocal load, no four musicians could have come from more varied musical experiences and backgrounds. That unique blend adds texture and dimension to the music, and brings a unique new sound to Texas country.
The key ingredients binding the group are a passion for making good music while bringing a breath of fresh air to the Texas music scene. Their mission is to create an interesting brand of music that comes from the heart and burns into the soul of red dirt country.
With almost 30 original songs and an amazing range of cover tunes, all delivered with their signature energy, the Matt Stapp Band grows their fan base with every performance. From their first show together in March 2009, momentum has taken the group through more than 40 shows to date, including opening for the Josh Abbott Band and rocking Save Mayfest with Reckless Kelly and Mickey and the Motorcars.
The Matt Stapp Band live CD is due for release in September, 2009. Their first studio single, “Could’ve Been”, is being released to radio stations across Texas and is already in regular rotation at Mandatory FM in Stephenville, TX.
