I grew up near Detroit, Michigan where fiddle players are known to be people who live down south and play country music.
I was a classically trained violinist, but I try not to let that hold me back. Pop and Rock are very, very different from Classical. Some things apply, other things don't. The trick is to decide which aspects to keep and which to abandon.
Certainly among many, many artists on my iPod, I'll say that several people I've played with through the years have been strong influences. Count Todd Howard, Trip Wamsley, David Lott, Tod Stark, Jared Hamilton, Tuff Blanton, and Sam Manriquez among those.
And Trip taught me that I am not a fiddle player. I do not have to conform to the world's idea of what a fiddle player is "supposed to" sound like. I am a musician who happens to use a violin as his brush and canvas. So don't EXPECT to hear anything, just take what you get.

I am an electric violinist, trumpet player, singer, songwriter, and electronic dabbler.
I started playing music when I was very young - so I don't have any memory of not knowing how to play. But I try to learn something new every day. So, in a sense, I'm still learning how to play.
I've always had opinions about how things ought to sound. Fortunately, I've been blessed to play with some awesome talents who sometimes agreed with me and sometimes didn't. I learned from them that things I didn't like might be okay after all. I also learned that some things I did like weren't really so hot.
I recently took a 2-year hiatus by moving to Guatemala with my wife to do mission work. It took me away from everything I knew and showed me a whole world that I never knew existed. As for music, I barely played a note. And nothing could have helped me more.
Now I return to the US and a music career re-focused, re-energized, and bursting at the seams with ideas. Luckily, I've been given an outlet in a band called Spare Change. They let me stretch and experiment with very few dirty looks. (God Bless them for their patience!)
Sometimes, I will try to be fresh, new, innnovative, and creative. Other times, I just want to make something beautiful. If I do my job, you'll know the difference!
