I have been living and working as a full time musician in Sydney for the last 12 or so years, and have been lucky enough to perform with some my favorite players, both locally and internationally, and as of right now, am enjoying it more than ever. I have always played the guitar, but ended up playing drums, a lot of the time.
Growing up in a large Adelaide family, my musical older brothers switched me on to the basics of roots music and recording methods, like Hound Dog Taylor, Muddy Waters, and Elmore James. From there I gained a life long passion for roots music and sounds in general, including the the great guitar players like BB King, Albert Collins, Johnny guitar Watson. Surf guitar music became another passion, where I earned the monica, Matt "the Rumble", after Link Wrays infamous instrumental hit, "The Rumble". Couldnt get enough of instrumental music in general, including, Booker T, and anything with a Hammond Organ, Brother Jack Mcduff, Jimmy smith etc. I love Motown, Stax, Elvis, Beatles, Al Green, Elvis Costello, and all sorts of guitar pop (old and new), and have been inspired by many of the brilliant people Ive seen and heard around town over the years.
I started playing gigs as youngster in Adelaide, before moving to Sydney and touring the length and breadth of Australia with the Bondi Cigars, Hippos, Ray Beadle to mention a few. Inernational collaborations include Denny Freeman (Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, Jimmie Vaughan), Kid Bangham (Fabulous Thunderbirds) Jonnie Johnson (Chuck Berry). Most recent guitar work has been a 5 year stint with Robert Susz in the "Continental Blues Party". I currently play drums at a lot of private shows with the John Field Band (Cockroaches, Wiggles), a fun Booker T / "Stax" style band called Johnny G and the E types, and free lance with The Hands, Organ Donnors, Adam Pringle, and all sorts of spontaneous bookings
As you can probably tell, I have focused a lot on playing live as much as possible, just never seem to get tired of it, and play every where from local dives to noteable music festivals. But most recently, I have been working on my own home recordings, and putting together a new guitar / vocal- Tex-Mex Blues, Dynamite soul, Rare instrumental band; "The Fabulous Rumble'ators!". It includes some of Sydneys best and most interesting musicians.
People often ask me, "Which do you prefer playing, drums or guitar?" For me the anwer has alway been both.
