Mauricio Callejas Salvadoran Singer-Songwriter
Mauricio Callejas is a part of a new generation of the "Nueva Cancion
Salvadoreña" [Salvadoran New Song] which is a blend of socially conscious songs
with contemporary poetry. His lyrics picture the daily life of his people,
stories that talk about love and hope, struggle and happiness, secret tales that
lay before our eyes.
In 2002, Mauricio, released his first solo CD "Cosas de la Calle" [Street
Things] in El Salvador. 11 songs acoustically recorded and self produced. Cosas
de la Calle, was an experiment that allowed him to insert sounds from the
street, birds, cars and people in between of the songs, to create a nostalgic
enviroment that depicts San Salvador's landscape and its contrasts. In 2005 One of these songs "El LLanto de la Ciudad" [The Cry Of The City] was awarded with the second place in the songwriter category by the Austin Songwriters Group. Mauricio is
the founder of centroamericanto.com, a directory of singer-songwriters of Central
America. This website has promoted the Central American music since 2003.
In 2005 he started producing a weekly radio program that showcases music of all kinds of
genres from this region.
In 2008, Mauricio worked with the Austin based musician Stephen Doster to
produce a second Album called "Magico" [Magic] a colourful experience that
brought together some of the best musicians in town to elaborate a delicate
collage of latin rythms and profound lyrics. "Magico" was pre-released in El
Salvador in October 2008 and will be released in the US in the upcoming months.
Some of the new songs can be listened here on MySpace.com.
