Composer, arranger, keyboardist, poly-instrumentalist, software developer.
Born in Rome, Italy in 1955, Maurizio started playing as self-learning organ and guitar at age of 10.
At 12/13 formed the first bands and started playing at school concerts.
At the age of 14 Maurizio explored rock playing with several bands and then moved to progressive / jazz-rock.
After graduating high school in 1973 he attended for a couple of years the math faculty at the University La Sapienza in Rome.
During those years he played mainly jazz/Rock with Italian musicians, including among many Massimo Urbani and Roberto Della Grotta.
Maurizio joined Goblin in 1975. The huge hit Profondo Rosso had the band tour Italy for the next couple of years as well as producing their first non-film related album, "Roller".
Maurizio left temporarily Goblin at the end of the recording of the Suspiria soundtrack, on November 1976.
He kept working as a performer and composer/arranger with the major artists on the scene, including Riccardo Cocciante, Gianni Morandi, Antonello Venditti, Mia Martini, Ivano Fossati, New Perigeo, Lucio Battisti, Adriano Pappalardo, Renato Zero, Patty Pravo.
Eventually Maurizio re-joined Goblin in late 1978, and participated to all the production of the band until 1983, including Volo (the only Pop detour experience as Goblin) and several soundtracks. (Over the years, Goblin shared 2 keyboardists: Maurizio and Claudio Simonetti. Each of them plays keyboards in about 50% of Goblin production. "Roller" and other small works from 1975/76 are the only exceptions with 2 keyboard players performing at the same time).
Over the same period Maurizio participated as keyboard session man to several soundtracks - mainly horror and thriller - written by other musicians.
In parallel, during the early eighties, Maurizio started to be interested in software development and in 1983 he realized the first midi card for Apple II ever made, named YUK. Software development involvement grew over the years, and expanded to non-music related applications. In early nineties Maurizio earned a bachelor in computer science.
Maurizio moved to Canada in 1998 with his wife, Cinzia Cavalieri, whom he met during the recording of Volo in 1982.
Recent musical works include soundtracks for documentaries and the recent album for the new BackToTheGoblin project, released in February 2006. BackToTheGoblin lineup include 4/5 of the original Goblin back in 1976: Maurizio Guarini, Fabio Pignatelli, Massimo Morante and Agostino Marangolo. In 2007 Maurizio put together a trio with two Canadian musicians, Chris Gartner (guit/bass) and Bob Scott (drums). The trio, initially called Goblinia and performing live mostly Goblin tunes rearranged, has then evolved in "Orco Muto", and expanded the repertoire by adding some original compositions.
Maurizio is currently working on a solo album that will be released hopefully by the end of 2009.
Maurizio is currently in the line-up of the reunited Goblin, that started an European tour in April 2009.

Cari Goblin , la notizia arrivata questa sera , mi ha veramente ucciso… Ma come… Adesso che avevate ricominciato a fare concerti , dopo quasi tre anni dall'uscita di Back To The Goblin , che tutto sembrava ricominciare .. , i bellissimi live di quest'estate con i fan entusiasti , e i progetti futuri di un altro album ed altri concerti per il 2010.. Tutto sfumato ? NO GOBLIN , NO ! Non mollate proprio adesso . Avete milioni di fan che vi aspettano , non deludeteci … Provateci ancora una volta .. Questa volta pero' affidandovi ad una casa discografica indipendente , oppure producendovi da soli . Trovatevi un manager adeguato che vi organizzi una tournee , oppure fatelo da soli , basta contattare migliaia di locali in tutta Italia e all'estero , posti piccoli , farete il pieno di gente
Anzi vi consiglierei di fare partecipare a questo progetto NOI FAN .
Pensate che un gruppo come i Marillion , erano in un periodo in cui non trovavano casa discografica e produttori , si affidarono ai fan club , chiedendo ad ogni membro di pre - ordinare il nuovo album molti mesi prima e a scatola chiusa , senza sapere nemmeno i brani inseriti nel disco . Ebbene i fan prenotarono quel disco e grazie all'appoggio di tutti , i Marillion poterono produrre il cd e organizzare i concerti . Questo va ancora avanti ancora oggi , dove il gruppo e' sempre supportato dai fan club .
Secondo me e' l'unico modo per fare Ritornare insieme i GOBLIN !!!!
