Might as Well is one of those bands who never really jumped on the wagon. Some may say they've been left behind, but it turns out that they're okay with that. With so many splinter scenes within the punk rock genre, these guys have simply continued to make honest music that reflects their passion as individuals.
Might as Well's roots in the GTA scene go back as far as 1996, where Mike and Mark originally played together under the name Auxiliary One. After several years of song-writing, playing shows, and developing both their sound and a local following, they evolved into Might as Well. A number of members came and went, including then bassist, and current Ill Scarlett guitarist, Will Marr. The hunt was on to find a suitable replacement.
Christian, an accomplished guitarist, expressed his interest, and picked up a four-string. With a wide array of influences, he stood head and shoulders above the other applicants, and brought a fresh element to the group. With his addition, it was decided that a second guitarist was essential to develop the sound they had long envisioned. Having been a long-time fan, Jay was already well known to the band. Upon hearing of the opening, he immediately expressed interest. His natural enthusiasm and musical prowess made him the easy choice. The quintet now worked to perfect their sound, and played shows tirelessly, despite Mike's busy college schedule.
Shortly after releasing a DIY full length in 2005, long-time vocalist Matt Dupley left Might as Well. He remains a close friend and supporter. The departure left questions and many uncertainties, but also provided the opportunity to hand-select a replacement. The boys took this time to regroup, create some new material, and search for a new front-man. It took longer than expected, but good things come to those who wait.
Ben contacted Might as Well in December of 2005, shortly after departing Sees the Day, his previous band of five years. An experienced guitarist and vocalist, with several small tours under his belt, he was familiar with the level of dedication needed to take the next step. The line-up was again complete, as Ben picked up the microphone, and Might as Well aimed their sights on lofty goals for the upcoming new year.
Might as Well have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a number of their favourite bands. Some of the more memorable include; Belvedere, Break the Silence, Moneen, The Fullblast, Pridebowl, Protest the Hero, Bigwig, BoysNightOut, Taken, A Wilhelm Scream and The Sainte Catherines, along with countless talented local bands from across Canada and the US.
Might as Well has recently released a 3 track EP with brand new material, which was recorded by Greg Dawson (Choke, The Reason) in early April. Their music has been featured on a number of compilation CDs. Expect more audio, a new web presence, and more merch to be available this fall.
The ambition has never been stronger, and the pieces are all in place. Expect great things from these guys in 2006, as they plan to spend much more time on the road and push harder than ever to rekindle the flames of punk rock in our hearts.
