Music is the Mistress, the title of Maxs latest album, says it all. Max has remained faithful to her and himself as revealed in the emotional and intimate tour he invites you to accompany him on. If you feel a bit voyeuristic then he has achieved what he set out to do and that is share with you the highs and lows of this journey we call life set to music.
Max has never done things by halves. Since his early beginnings as a drummer in various bands in the southern beaches area of Sydney and front man and the driving force behind Big Day Out 99 local stagers, Mach 1 - Max Smidt has gone on to prove himself an accomplished singer/songwiter with a flair for arranging things just the right way. Music is the Mistress is not the end of the journey but the first leg of a long road trip. You will recognise some songs although youve never heard them before that is just they way Max writes. A bit like being shown postcards of places youve never been to but a few have turned up in your mail box from others who have. Either way, you will relate to something on every track from the darkness of Devil Wings to the childlike simplicity of Something New.
If you are used to the Max who strutted his stuff on the bar at the Annandale Hotel and duelled with the drummer on a car bonnet drum kit (often ablaze) then be prepared for the other side of the coin. This is Max always surprising us and raising the bar. He does so once more with Music is the Mistress an eclectic mix of melodic acoustic rock and edgy arrangements.
Most recently Max has supported some of Australias finest talent Diesel, James Rayne, Jenny Morris, Ian Moss, Abby Dobson, Dragon, Mark Seymour, Sarah Mcleod, Jack Jones.
Music is the Mistress is out on Codeone and distributed through MGM.
