Powerful, sensitive, smart, and seductive; these words and more have been used to describe the poetry and music of singer songwriter Maya Dorn. Daughter of legendary poet Edward Dorn, Maya’s childhood was spent in nomadic world travel and influenced by many renowned artists such as Allen Ginsberg, Amiri Baraka, and Marianne Faithfull who passed through the household regularly.
Now living in San Francisco Maya is a member of Aphrodesia, a 10 piece afro-beat ensemble that became the first American band to ever play Femi Kuti’s New African Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, last year on their tour of West Africa. She performs in and is the co-writer of the rock opera Venus Christ and is currently working on a new album of solo material. .............................................................................................................
"Advice from Rosalie Sorrels: Listen to Maya Dorn! She’s got grace, style and sense of humor. A first rate emerging talent."-- Rosalie Sorrels

"Maya’s music is hot!"-- Jimmy "Jazz" Prescott of G. Love & Special Sauce

"Maya Dorn makes me want to deport myself for the good of all mankind. I want to give her all my money. She is beautiful, soulful, humble, talented, unusual, and sound. I love her music." -- Rose Polenzan Daemon Records recording artist

"Performing poet, singer Maya Dorn presents her own original and poignant work in song / language / music -- a work with a sharp, refined ear that finds true speech in the raw and cooks it with a troubadour’s passion. She extends and gives a further life to the inimitable poetic discoveries of her father, Edward Dorn, whose Gunslinger has located and sustained a unique domain of being for decades and beyond. Maya finds its outer reaches only a poet of her gender, direct presence, sense of responsibility and humor could tell this way."- George Quasha, poet, publisher

Good news: the Sunday Contra Costa Times rated my June 11 show at the Plough & Stars a "best bet" (page D5, May 25). They even put my pic next to Death Cab for Cutie and Brad Paisley. Not bad company to be in ...
As the paper says: "Berkeley musician Steve Taylor-Ramírez takes his Latin-infused neo-folk, across the Bay to San Francisco's Plough and Stars pub, 9 p.m. 116 Clement St. Free. (415) 751-1122, http://www. theploughandstars. com."
We hope you can make it. Espero que allá nos vemos.

Hulloo Maya Dorn,
I remember you when I was at university at Naropa some years back. I saw you with Skin and the Women from Mars show at the Fox. Love your new songs. Hope you are wonderful. I love NH, but miss my Boulder days too. Thanks for the lovely voice.
