Bio
The young rising artist, May Alqasim was born in the Kingdom of Bahrain on January 30th 1991. Though May's background reflects Arab/Mediterranean heritage (casting from Bahrain and Tunisia), May has been growing up studying and socializing in a westernized community for all of her life. May is known as one of the only young developing female singer/songwriters' in the region, one that is determined to make a difference in the Middle East where a constant battle between her true passion and to proving to the world that talent exists in this corner of the globe as well. With an environment that has been truly underestimated, May began to unlock the doors and break boundaries where - metaphorically and physically speaking - The East would meet the West. Her talent was first discovered as a composer when she was at the age of only 6 years old. She started off simply writing poetry, until eventually advancing and developing further, until blossoming into more meaningful lyrics. Soon after, May's voice was discovered as yet another talent relating to the music world. She started experimenting with her voice more and more, joining talent shows, involving herself with any musical event involving her school. Soon after, May felt as though something was still missing. This was when began to teach herself how to play the piano to accompany the songs she had written. By the age of 15, May was finally recognized and appreciated to a higher degree. Hip Hop DJ/Producer 'DJ Outlaw' distinguished a unique potential in her that he believed could not go to waste. It was then, when May became a part of the number One Hip Hop organization in the region , 'Outlaw Productions' who acknowledged her potential within the same field of music. Since then, May has accomplished singing her songs in various live performances around the entire region such as an opening for The "Bring It On" break dancing contest, a show along side worldly renowned R&B artist "K-Young" another opening at the Red House Hip Hop music festival for rapping star"Hot Rod" of G-unit and Canadian artist "Big Page", the Formula One Race zone Venue performances , Bud Music's "Finley Quaye" event (which was a no-show making May the headliner of an event of over a thousand people) , Along side Kuwaiti Hip Hop R&B group "Army Of One" and numerous other shows around the globe including Oman, Dubai, Tunisia and Paris London and more. Aside from all this, one particular event is one which look May's career for a spin. This was May's performance at the UrFilez private VIP launch which consisted of performances by artists such as Jenifer Hudson, legendary James Ingram and Mary Brown. On this occasion, May had the chance to network with many industry names including Hollywood's music producer/actor "Orlando Jones", representatives of Jay Z's "Roc Nation" label and Def Jam's "L.A Reid" was also present. Some of these names mentioned took a serious interest in May's project. As well as being part of Dj Outlaw's professional debit album (which launched in the market and all digital music distributors such as Itunes and Amazon), May has also been working with many artists and producers from all over the globe in order to broaden her horizons and seek unity through different worlds, with music acting as the shaking hand. Proud of her Arabic roots, she has also recently been a part of Dj Outlaw's Mixtape Series "The Middle East Invasion Volume 2" which features some of most spoken of Artists from all over Middle Eastern region - somewhat of a collective tool to help portray how when youth, talent and drive combine, statements can be made. This proved to be the case. Added to that, May has also been a part of the "Bahrain Unite" song and music video (which received over 15,000 views in under 12 hours) which offered her a chance to be interviewed by the official BBC radio station podcasting across all of UK regions , East Asia and the USA alike. Furthermore, her songs frequently air on the Kingdom's national radio station "Bahrain's 96.5FM" as well as Tunisia's biggest radio station , "MOSAIQUE FM". Currently, May has taken a different direction with her music and has decided to pursue her career individualistically. She now travels the world to engross herself in reputable shows, music workshops and vocal classes as well as collaborating with bands, producers and musicians from around the world. She has recently performed in several shows around Bahrain such as Block 338 , Dejavu as well as in London. As of March 2012 , May had been selected to participate with RedBullMusicAcademy's "Bass Camp" which took place in Beirut. Although she had never applied , it was one of the biggest achievements so far. There she collaborated with artists, performed around Beirut City , recorded at the Redbull Studio's as well as land interviews with France 24, UK newspapers, Local stations around Beirut and more. As of today, May is in the process of building her own home studio and works towards recording singles, music videos and a promising solo album to be released soon. From this point on, May's ability can only improve further. For collaborations, features, show bookings and interviews contact info.mayalqasim@gmail.com -
