There are many, many injustices in this world and the Mayan
Children project exists to help those who can not defend
themselves. We are especially interested in the indigenous
people of Latin America who are in desperate need of
assistance.
The poverty level is a vicious circle. As with the indigenous
people in most countries, the Mayans are considered the
lowest class in Guatemala. Many people in the highlands of
Guatemala only speak the Mayan language of Kakchiquel.
In order to find a job they MUST speak Spanish. To learn
Spanish, they MUST go to school. But they cannot afford
to go to school because they cannot find work…
because they do not speak Spanish.
Abuse, whether mental, physical, or sexual, is happening all
over Latin America. Human trafficking of children is a rampant
crime that happens every day. Children as young as five years
old are forced into slavery and prostitution. Prostitution is
legal in Guatemala. While it is not legal for children to be
involved, the police are either easily bribed into looking the
other way, or they are actively part of the problem.
We are working to fight abuse and slavery and poverty and disease
and hunger and poor education. We use fundraising efforts
to try and create a better life for the beautiful children of
Latin America and break that vicious circle. We work on a
completely volunteer basis, so every single dollar donated
goes directly to assist and rescue the Mayan children. We
personally travel to Guatemala to visit the Mayan children
and insure that the funds go toward the people to whom they
were intended. While we have many short-term goals (such as providing clean water filters and sending children to school), and many long-term goals (such as safe housing facilities for abused children), we work from project to project to generate funding for these worthy goals. Our current project is a children's book written specifically for the Mayan children in three languages, Spanish, English, and K'iche Mayan...all in the same book. This book contains characters and scenes all native to the highlands of Guatemala, making this book culturally relevant. The message of the story is that every child is special exactly as they are. It is a fun, colorful adventure story with a great self-esteem theme.
We hope that you will partner with us as we do our part to
make the world a better place and assist these beautiful people. There is nothing you can do
that will ever be as important as making a difference in
the life of a child.
