Influences
Her personal influences range from Nina Simone to Fiona Apple, Joni Mitchell to Kate Bush, Skip James to Elton John, Billie Holiday to Bob Dylan, etc...
Bodega Bay, Northern Californian born sweet offspring of an eccentric 60's hippie family. Father a local woodworker-musician, mother a sculptor still running a well known Sonoma County local artist gallery. MAYA spent her early days studying classical piano, sculpting, singing, and, just being a fun loving beach girl. Regardless of already having carved herself an important role as a successful organic chemistry research scientist, she has finally decided to get back to what is natural for her, putting aside the safety of this lucrative career to pursue her true love: MUSIC... A landscape of beautiful sandy beaches mixed with a steady diet of be-bop, folk, afro-latin, soul, blues & gospel music gave MAYA the ingredients to create her own sound which resonates through a variety of genres... Mahalia Jackson, Bob Dylan, John Coltrane, Ricky Lee Jones, Tom Waits, Mamas & the Papas, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Monk & Lady Day were always coming out of the family stereo!
