Maybe Smith is the musical alias of Colin Skrapek from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The moniker holds no major significance besides being easier to pronounce than a Polish surname, though it also happens to be the name of a gunslinger in an obscure 1950s western film.
Maybe Smith has been releasing densely packed pop music full of samples, electronic squiggles and other curiosities since 2002. He has earned praise as "a highlight of Canadian indie music" (Exclaim!), "a true northern talent" (Chart Magazine) and "Canada's best kept musical secret" (Grant Lawrence, CBC Radio 3). In 2008 his album Animals & Architects was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award. It lost to a Nickelback-esque rock album.

Regardless of your opinion of Bruce Power's wish to build a Nuclear Power Plant along the North Sask River (once in production we automatically become a waste storage province...OBAMA recently ceased further funding to their Yucca Mtn. $13 Billion nuclear waste repository fiasco...and some country cousins in Saskatchewan look like they are willing to take the US and other waste with them on their way home ...from a sunday picnic??? Oh, just being facetious!) Anyway, you can be better informed by attending the Uranium Development Committee Public Hearing at the Travelodge in Saskatoon at 7pm June 15. Check saskuranium.ca for other locations.
Failing all of the above, Saskatoon music is to die for..and that lead by Maybe Smith, Carbon Dating Service, Fjords, Sheepdogs etc etc. etc. Music is medicine!! Thanking you for that.

NxEW.ca is a new Canadian music group blog. We have 60 + writers across Canada (and a few in the U.S.). We welcome anyone who wants to write about Canadian music - including musicians, promoters, managers, etc. (We're not the CBC and we exist to promote Canadian music, so conflict of interest is not an issue). If you'd like to chip in on the blog or want to submit stuff for consideration for the podcast get in touch at beach.justin at gmail.com
