Mayz are a four piece Progressive Rock/Metal band based in the south of England comprised of Bassist Andy Booth, Vocalist/Guitarist, Seszar Tucker, Drummer, Andy Sturges and Guitarist Dan Valverde.
A wealth of experience in gigging, touring and recording makes MAYZ a professional and dependable band.
1996 saw the band form, with a slightly different line up to the present, and the release of the first Demo, ‘The Dawn’. Followed in 1998 by the bands first albums worth of materal entitled ‘Dree One’s Weird’. The success and recognition that album formed landed MAYZ a slot at Rock In The Park in Germany. MAYZ were met with applause.
After extensive gigging around the South Coast and London MAYZ settled to record their next EP ‘Blood On Fire’. A small change from the their usual style, MAYZ added a psychedelic edge to their material. Tracks like ‘Blood On Fire’ and ‘Electro Living’ were met with acclaim. A heavy schedule and professional approach in 2001 saw MAYZ confirming support slots with metallers Paradise Lost and, the bands highlight to that point, classic rock legends, Rainbow. Both shows being played in MAYZ’s hometown of Portsmouth.
2003 saw the band joining forces with Cranes members Ben Baxter and Jim Shaw to record and engineer MAYZ’s first live album, ‘Live at The Millennium Hall’. This gave the band a chance to premiere some new material such as ‘Broken Eyes’ and ‘Fuck You!’. Both songs were met with excitement seeing the former staying in the set until recently and the latter being used on top skateboard films in the UK.
Spurred on by their growing popularity in the metal scene MAYZ set out to record their rawest effort yet, 2004's ‘Fuck You! EP’. The disc included live favorites, ‘Broken Eyes’ and ‘Fuck You!’ and new song ‘Concrete Syringe’, a tour de force of brutal riffs and odd time signatures that is still in the set today. The song was inspired by Seszar Tucker’s anarchic backlash to a structure built in Portsmouth, costing millions of pounds, that resembles a hyper dermic needle.
More shows followed making MAYZ a well known name on the scene. A homecoming gig at The Wedgewood rooms, Portsmouth with local band Vallen Brosa was a great success.
The band started to write more new material and, in 2006, started work with, IQ and Big Big Train producer Rob Aubry on their newest effort, ‘Monkey Brain EP’. Thought as, by many, as MAYZ’s most well rounded work to date. Featuring favourites such as ‘Eagle’ and the now ‘tweaked’ version of ‘Concrete Syringe’. MAYZ decided that the EP could be part of a huge promotion and landed themselves a distribution deal with Astral Records making the EP available worldwide on iTunes. Riding on a wave, 2007 saw MAYZ secure a five date, headlining tour of the Czech Republic ending with a show at the prestigious Futurum Music Bar in Prague, with Paul Gilbert.
Sadly the same year saw the departure of long time guitarist Doug Cleeve. The wave had stopped abruptly and MAYZ now needed another guitarist. This lead to the recruitment of Dan Valverde. Dan was a fan and friend of the band and had a lot of experience in performance and recording. Rehearsals started and by August 2007 the band were back with a new line up and fresh sound which could only be a positive thing.
The rest of 2007 and early 2008 saw MAYZ making their way through London pulling good crowds and pushing the ‘Monkey Brain EP’ to new listeners.
MAYZ continue to write and record new material and plan to release a new CD in 2008. With a huge online fan base, European recognition and perfect line up things can only move forward for MAYZ.
