‘Early on I developed a great love for Soul music...my older sister Sue did a jazz course at the WA conservatorium of music and had a 14 piece band called ‘Hothouse’ where they played funky R&B soul tunes....I was hooked!....even ended up doing backing vocals...that was the coolest thing ...being right there singing these songs at such a young age.
After many lead roles in both drama & musicals, a singing scholarship, performing with soul bands throughout Perth and finishing my degree in media studies...I then packed up my life and moved across the country, to Sydney...
There I took Speech Level Singing (SLS) lessons, completed On Camera Connections Film and TV Acting workshops, sang on TV/radio commercials, demos galore, you know the deal. From there I was so fortunate to quickly move into many of the best gigs in Sydney, including The Opera Bar & the prestigious ‘Basement’ ...
A few years ago, through a demo, I got an opportunity to go to the U.S. to songwrite in the City of Soul, Detroit, Motown itself! It was seriously a dream come true... I thought this was my Big Break... Dedicated I went back twice, unfortunately things didn’t pan out quite true, as I’m told they can often do in the music biz... so I came back, heartbroken & disappointed. I decided there was no way I was going to give up!....It was time to do my own thing, time to start living my lyrics!...sooo
The album, ‘Soul Tripping’ is a collection of my stories about love, loss, lust and having the courage to be yourself...
I knew my groove, my sound, would come from my love of soul music, fat beats, and the beauty of words and live instruments...all I needed was for someone to be able to capture that love, layer it with a bassline and a drum beat. When I met producer/engineer/rapper-singer ‘No Qualms’, we hit it off musically straight away. Next thing you know it’s a year and a half of late night recording sessions, in and amongst gigs, SLS singing teaching (which I love!) and not much sleep... it hasn’t been an easy road, sometimes I was a blubbering emotional mess after a vocal session...poor quizzle. It wasn’t all deep & meaningful though, there’s lots of laughs & naughty takes that no-one will ever hear...well maybe in headphones!
SOUL TRIPPING is exactly how I envisaged it... soulful... sexy... cool... fresh...
