Michael is an upright and electric bass player, as well as a composer, living and working in Seattle, Washington. Transplanted four years ago from Harrisburg PA, he aims to blend his east coast approach and upbringing with the various styles of music he has encountered while living on the west coast. He has studied Jazz and Contemporary World music at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and Cornish College of the Arts, Seattle, where he received his BM.
A few of the notable performances that he has given in Seattle include, but are not limited to, the Northwest Folklife Festival 2007 (Seattle) with Quartetto De Roos, Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center with Jovino Santos Neto (Recording Academy "Grammy" Career Event), the Century Ballroom (Seattle) with the Diedre Peterson quartet. Other venues where he has performed include Tula's, the Musiquarium Lounge @ the Triple Door, Gallery 1412, The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, The Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park, Tost, Nectar, the District Lounge, and Egan's Ballard Jam House.
In addition to performing the works of well known composers, he also writes and performs his own music, which draws influences from a number of genres including Jazz. He has also participated in workshops as a featured player with Ron Miles, Wynton Marsalis, Ingrid Jensen, Carl Allen, Joe La Barbera, and Jon Wikan. Most recently he was the recipient of a full scholarship to Centrum's Jazz at Port Townsend (WA) under artistic director and bassist extraordinaire John Clayton where he received instruction from bassist Martin Wind as well as many others. He has studied with a number of notable musicians including Rob Brosh, Jim Knapp, Denney Goodhew, Ronald Simon, Chuck Deardorf, and Julian Priester, but feels that many of the best lessons he has ever learned were on the bandstand.
It seems that Christmas time is here once again, and it is time again to bring in the New Year. We wish the merriest of Christmas to you and your loved ones, and we wish you happiness and prosperity in the year ahead. Yola
No, I didn't move back to Philly. I like Seattle even though it's far away from family. Hey, I've checked out some of your work with 3 Spot. That's a cool group. Nice to hear you on electric. Happy 2009!
Wow! That is a big promo pic! I have a gig of my own music that night, too... At Mainstage in Lower Queen Anne. Mine doesn't start until 8 or 9 or something, so I think I'll try to make it to your first.
Meeester Catts! I have cell phone now. Can you believe. It is the 4th sign of the apocalypse. I will email it to you, because I can't get you on the phone. Yaaarr!
