Hip-hop concert to benefit shelter By ANGEL N. ROSS News Journal

MANSFIELD -- Casey Barwick wants to offer something positive for Mansfield.

He's planned a hip-hop concert to benefit the Mansfield Domestic Violence Shelter from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at CD Jungle.

"I want to give back in any way I can. It's nice to give back to the less fortunate," said Barwick, who also goes by the hip-hop alias "Confidence."

Barwick, 23, defines himself as an inspirational rapper, who tells stories about everyday life. "I don't talk about the negative things," he said.

Other local hip-hop artists to perform include King Dave, Prophecy and Shy. Also on the program are Alphabetics and Dominique Larua, of Columbus, and Snowman and Leonard from West Virginia.

"People will want to see the out-of-town artists," Barwick said.

Admission is $4 or four non-perishable items. All proceeds will benefit the Domestic Violence Shelter.

CD Jungle owner Tina Wheeler said she's been having some type of benefit show for the Domestic Violence Shelter for eight years.

"The kids were never really asked to be a part of (benefit projects)," she said. "They love to be a part something positive."

Wheeler said in past years she's conducted a rock show. This year's hip-hop show is "just another way to reach another segment of the community," she said.

Barwick and Wheeler said they will use proceeds to fill a Christmas list from children at the shelter.

"The Domestic Violence Shelter is at its capacity during the holidays," Wheeler said. "We like to help the kids out that may not have any other Christmas."

Well What is it about Confidence?? Hmm. I can tell you straight off the bat, that one of his strengths, in this writer's opinion, is his smokin' jazz beats and samples with a precise vocal to compliment them perfectly!!! ("One Life" - www.myspace.com/mcconfidence)

I also had a chance to briefly interact with this young man via internet messages and found that he is one determined Artist who is destined for the "Big Time". Don't sleep on this man's skills as he will be a force to be reckoned with. His name not only says who he is but it also states WHAT he is!!! Please Believe it. Hip-hop solo artist dabbles in funk rock By Norm Narvaja News Journal

MANSFIELD -- Local musician Casey Barwick crosses over, performing with hybrid funk-rocker band The Genius Project and under his own hip-hop alias, Confidence.

Barwick has released three recordings as Confidence and performed at some area venues.

The CD Jungle, 1432 Lexington Ave., will host a free party for Barwick's fourth release as Confidence, "Conscious Moods," at 9 p.m. Saturday. The News Journal caught up with Barwick to talk about his work. Question: What's the meaning behind the title of your new album? Answer: It means being aware of your surroundings and the world around you, everything from daily life to politics. Q: How would you describe the music you make as Confidence? A: I call it inspirational hip-hop. I compose all of the music myself, working with a guitar and bass, recording it to a computer. Q: There is a lot of negative imagery and stereotypes associated with hip-hop and urban music. Do you find yourself fighting harder to get people past those images when it comes to what you do? A: Yes, there is a lot of negative images out on the radio and on video. The entire look of rappers having lots of money and driving fancy cars is neat and all, but a majority of people can't connect with it. A majority of people work jobs and get by day to day. That's the people I can communicate to with my music, because I'm also just a guy who works for a living. Q: Do you get funny looks when you play with The Genius Project and later show up doing your own thing as Confidence? A: Not really. I incorporate some of what I do into the Genius Project. I like listening to and playing all types of music. Q: Finally, name three records you've been listening to lately. A: Nas' "Hip-hop is Dead," Mos Def's "True Magic" and Soullive.

Mansfield News Journal August 23rd 2007 Genius Project band member's brainchild showcases local music News Journal staff report LEXINGTON -- Casey Barwick is almost always thinking about music in one form or another. His solo hip-hop name is Confidence, and he's a member of local band The Genius Project. Barwick will turn his attention to organizing when the Do You Want More music showcase Saturday at Lexington Community Park. The event's first half will feature local and regional rock bands and the second half will feature hip-hop artists, including Barwick's Confidence project. "This is something we started about two years ago," he said. "We wanted to provide an opportunity for local musicians to show people what they can do. It's something I hope will grow with each year." Barwick said there will be free food and drinks for visitors. One of the returning musicians is Jonathan Hape, who plans to unveil new songs. "We've already written enough songs for a new album," Hape said. "It will be myself and a guitarist. But we won't be a strictly acoustic set. We're bringing along a keyboard, half of a drumset and a glockenspiel for the gig." Hape expressed his appreciation for Barwick's work and for his inclusion in the event. "Casey works really hard at putting this event together," Hape said. "It's great for Mansfield to have someone like him create a community among local musicians."
