Ghost of the dead car's son's Blurbs
About me:
"I think this is a good time to tell you that the Cartwright interests have just begun building a new bank in Grover's Corners...And they've asked a friend of mine what they should put in the cornerstone for people to dig up...a thousand years from now....Of course, they've put in a copy of the New York Times and a copy of Mr. Webb's Sentinel.... We're putting in a Bible...and the Constitution of the United States--and a copy of William Shakespeare's plays. What do you say, folks? What do you think? Y'know--Babylon once had two million people in it, and all we know about 'em is the names of the kings and some copies of wheat contracts...and contracts for the sale of slaves. Yet every night all those families sat down to supper, and the father came home from his work, and the smoke went up the chimney,--same as here. And even in Greece and Rome, all we know about the real life of the people is what we can piece together out of the joking poems and the comedies they wrote for the theatre back then. So I'm going to have a copy of this play put in the cornerstone and the people a thousand years from now'll know a few simple facts about us--more than the Treaty of Versailles and the Lindbergh flight. See what I mean?"

It is THE CLASH "week," so I'll be updating MODERATELY OBSESSED with detailed images and evaluation of the LP "Combat Rock" from THE CLASH...along with mp3s for each track.

Hey McCosham! Say, did you hear about me voting in the nation's second most prominent pop critics poll?

http://pop.idolator.com/342043/ballot-charles-a-hohman

When I browse the legendary crits and Cultural Studies punching bags who also voted in this poll, I don't miss that Master's Degree one goddamn bit!

You and the wife need to come to Baltimore one day, someday. Seriously. (But wait till I get my own place and can host you. Still, put in the queue.)

Also, according to this, I'm the 179th most centrist of voters in either poll, and me and a certain ubiquitous AllMusic scribe have similar tastes. Go fig.

I'm so sorry I didn't call back. I just realized that I hadn't done that. I was in a bad mood that night so it is probably best I missed the call.

Anyway, were you in Cinci for the holiday? I should have called because then we could have met up or something. We'll have to do that over Christmas if you'll be around.

Also, you should go to the Battleground States conference...even if you don't want to present anything. Get Sarah in on it too. I'll be heading in with James and Courtney. Jenn will be coming and so will Michael and his new man. Matt might also be in town that weekend too. We can take over the town once again!

Osh kosh McCosh. Oh my gosh, it's been awhile since I heard from thee. How does life go? Where are you working now, anyway? How's married life?

And on a far more important bent, who was the greatest "SNL" Weekend Update anchor of all-time? I've noticed this matter is quite inflammatory, especially for pop cult geeks with too much time on their hands. Perhaps an authority such as yourself can objectively settle it.

In case the news has not reached you, Mr. Newlywed, Tony Wilson is now screaming at Ian Curtis in the boneyard. The Factory Records entrepeneur died today of kidney failure, age 57. From now on, Steve Coogan will play him in real life as well. Anyway, despite this disheartening news, hope your life is sweller than a swollen thumb.

Howdy. How goes it, sir? Evidently you had a birthday. I hope it was happy.
The Pied Piper of Postmodern Awkwardness

Jun 24 2007 2:51 AM

Well, sir, after the repulsion and international outrage that last year's birthday greeting on this forum triggered (or, okay, exacerbated), it might be wise to tone things down a notch. But alas, I was never one for wisdom.

That notwithstanding, I hope your 24th birthday, your first as a master of arts and as a husband, proves a magnetic, magnificient, maniacal joy!
And if you happen to see Meg White in Detroit, give her my number. I'll settle for that chick from the Von Bondies instead though.

Happy b-day, T-bag! Here's to cancer!

I spent the bulk of the week stocking sci-fi books. The fact that at least half the covers featured buxom women and obvious phallic symbols has lent me a newfound respect for a genre I once loathed. Granted, I don't see myself reading Heinlein anytime soon, but still, I never realized sci-fi sexuality stretched beyond tentacle rape. Silly me, I guess.

Tony, if you've ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me...well, I just purchased the first season of "WKRP" on DVD. It includes the show's finest two eps, "Turkeys Away" and "Fish Story." Suncoast had it on sale for $20, half the list price, so I grabbed it. I generally only buy TV DVD sets if it averages less than a dollar per episode. Haven't viewed it yet, so I can't speculate on the choppy music edits, but I'm not much of a purist and only know the show through syndication anyway. Anywho, just thought I'd share this with the one 'Nati son even cooler than Dr. Johnny Fever! (Though, sorry, not hotter than Bailey.)

Hey Mack Daddy. Have you heard anything off of Albert Hammond Jr.'s solo album yet? It's gotten respectable reviews, but the first single "101," which he performed on Conan last night, sounds a suspicious lot like New Order's "Love Vigilantes." The choruses, at least, are mighty similar. Imagine a Stroke appropriating a melody from somewhere else! The world continues to find new ways to shock me.

A perk about no longer attending school is you get to read whatever the fuck you want for fun, and not feel the slightest bit guilty about it! To boot, I'm reading this novel called "Home Land" by a dude named Sam Lipsyte. My friend Jackson recommended it. The first person narrator was known as Teabag in high school. For some odd reason, this made me think of you.

Dude, did you see the Devin Davis bulletin about his "Rainbow Connection" cover?!? It's supposedly on his page, but my home connection is too slow for such luxuries and my office PC lacks speakers. Thus, I don't know how soon I'll get to hear it. But if you manage to check it out, do let me know how it is. And thank me for further enabling some thesis procrastination.

P.S.: Being an SNL scholar and all, are you capable of differentiating between Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis (sp?)? It's been nearly two seasons now and I still can't tell those two schmucks apart. Could be worse though; my mother thinks Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are the same person.

Eh. Not much new here really. Just the usual exhibitions of infantile immaturity and neurotic erotica. For example, I've gained like 30 pounds and have taken up smoking so my mouth regularly tastes like a stale Winston. Which is all the more suitable for my kissing prospects!

I just might be voyaging out to BG in a couple months or sometime before everyone graduates. Nothing's in stone quite yet but I'll keep you and the other people who might care posted.

These are some interesting blurbs on the battle over music licensing for the series, a controversy ever since the show went into syndication.

Just read your "Children of Men" bulletin...

Oh, the humility!

Heh heh. I shall consider heeding your modest opinion though. Hope your final (!!!) semester at BGSU is off to a roaring, but hopefully not mauling, start.

Running into you was most enjoyable. We actually only watched two movies, "Repulsion" and "Brothers of the Head," and I spent most of the latter puking my life away. But you know what they say: The best laid plans of mice and men often end in vomiting.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING 2006, T-bag!

Be sure to gourmandize yourself unconscious tomorrow and consume yourself penniless on Friday! And try not to wind up hanging upside down with a fucking fork up your ass!

P.S.: So I'm too zapped to come up with personalized comments for each and every friend. I feel tremendous amounts of shame and guilt over sending out a mass comment. Does that make me neurotic?
