"Packed into the St. Andrew's basement surrounded by a packed house of fellow rap enthusiasts, I was beginning to lose patience with the parade of pretenders performing on stage at the "Best of Detroit" show. Then from amongst the indecipherable lyrics of over 20 wannabe hoods and toughs, a truly inspired message rang out.
Despite childish sounding names, MC DJ Maximus Stylus Extravaganzous' songs each resound with depth. Each song leading to the next beginning with the introspective "Who Am I?" and finally ending with the explosive beats of "Touch My Magic Missile Bitch” Called upon to deliver an unrehearsed encore, MC DJ M.S.E rose to the occasion with an impromptu freestyle piece packed with complex structure and innuendo rarely found in even the most polished performances. I now understand that this is part of what he is known for. I eagerly paid the $5 for his album and wasn't disappointed when I got home and cranked up the bass. MC DJ Maximus Stylus Extravaganzous' debut rap album, "Visions of an Oppressed Mind" is guaranteed to stand the test of time.
MC DJ M.S.E's message, though couched in terms of a popular adolescent game, is so profound that it is assured to resonate with listeners of all backgrounds. Many of the tracks on this album reflect on serious issues despite flippant sounding titles. "Touch My Magic Missile Bitch," while based on the potency of an iconic enchantment from a popular fantasy game is actually a commentary of the difficulties our young people face in finding their own role among enormous pressure and the analogy is surprisingly apt. It is a tribute to MC DJ M.S.E's genius that this complex work touches on so many issues in only four tracks. From racism, economic disparity, corporate irresponsibility, the environment, health, and the duality of man, the message is cogent and cohesive. Frustration with the status quo and hope for a better future are mixed equally in this impressive collection suggesting that MC DJ Maximus Stylus Extravaganzous is worthy of his name and will soon be hosted at more prestigious venues."
