About me:
Somos M.E.Ch.A de UC San Diego. We believe that social change and social action must be community-based and politically charged.
We meet every MONDAY @ 5:00PM in the Communidad Room in the Cross-Cultural Center.
Who I'd like to meet:
The self-determination of our community is now the only acceptable mandate for social and political action; it is the essence of Chicano/a commitment. Culturally, the word Chicano/a, in the past a pejorative and class-bound adjective, has now become the root idea of a new cultural identity for our people. It also reveals a growing solidarity and the development of a common social praxis...
Chicanismo/a draws its faith and strength from two main sources: from the just struggle of our people and from an objective analysis of our community's strategic needs. We recognize that without a strategic use of education, an education that places value on what we value, we will not realize our destiny. Chicanos/as recognize the central importance of institutions of higher learning to modern progress, in this case, to the development of our community.

• The DREAM Act would reduce the dropout rate of immigrant students.
• It would lead more immigrants to graduate from high school and college.
• Freeing thousands of young immigrants to join the legal workforce.
• These young people had no say in the decision that resulted in their coming to the U.S., and it is inefficient as well as wrong for the government to keep them from the achievements that they can earn by their own talent and hard work in the land where they were raised.

> I.C.E.
(Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is the federal agency created
> to operate away from the US/Mexico border, and took the role of detention
> of undocumented people over from the from the US Border Patrol in 2003.
> This agency is responsible for the waves of immigration raids occurring
> with increasing frequency and intensity over the last five years.
These
> raids occur at workplaces, communities and most recently at public
> institutions such as schools and universities. I.C.E.
agents conduct these
> raids dressed as civilians, they drive unmarked vehicles, are heavily
> armed and usually identify themselves only as “police.
”
>
> Last Thursday (05/15/2008), I.C.E.
raided a bakery in Pacific Beach, and
> detained at least 18 workers.
Two human rights observers documenting the
> activities of I.C.E.
during this raid were threatened with arrest,
> aggressively questioned, and one particularly hostile I.C.E.
agent took
> their video camera away from them.
These two human rights workers are UCSD
> affiliates; one is a current student and the other a recent graduate from

>
> A bakery employee who was not detained, although questioned and released,
> is also a current UCSD student.
Soon after the raid in Pacific Beach,
> I.C.E.
agents reappeared at the apartment of this student on the UCSD
> campus and subjected him to extensive interrogation and a search of his

After finding nothing, they left the UCSD campus, apparently
