It is amazing how many patients I encounter are using a panoply of drugs for psychotherapeutic applications that are either useless or cause adverse effects. Nowhere is Neurontin recommended for anxiety or depression. A recent article in Psychiatric News, official organ of the American Psychiatric Association, described over 75% off label use by physicians. This disturbing fact indicates the level of harm that continues to be wrought by big pharm encouraging physicians to prescribe their potions. The polypharmacy with opioids, sedatives, and anti-seizure medication then must be counteracted with stimulants that produce an ineffectual but demotivating mix of drugs. I believe that minimal pharmaceutical intervention should also be coupled with behavioral elements. Therapeutic exercise, massage, and proper diet can be assisted by vaporized or oral cannabis.
With the traditional comprehensive and minimal pharmaceutical regimen, a wide range of chronic conditions are optimized by this common sense approach. This is not to deny the value and necessity of certain specific medications like antihypertensives or anti-diabetic agents. We must turn away from monomolecular mercantile madness.
