Formed from the ashes of local York bands Knee Deep and Forty7three in the autumn of 2005, MWA started out as a just-for-fun side project, just playing a few covers, but following the amicable departure of bassist Adi Bury from Knee Deep (three bands is too much, even for the Burymeister!) MWA incorporated the original songs by Knee Deep and Forty7three into the set also.
NEW INN, EASINGWOLD - PART DEUX - Review by Bill Harding
On March 2nd, Megawatt Winged Avenger returned to the New Inn,
Easingwold. You're damn right they did. This time they were a five
piece. The new guitarist, Ash, blended in as though he'd been there
since the foundation of the band two years ago. He hails from Tamworth
in Staffordshire, for some unknown reason. He doesn't try to upstage
original guitarist Rosco, but instead complements the old sod's
lightning fast fretwork; spot on. There's something special about MWA
gigs. The guys don't take themselves seriously, but they take their
music seriously and it shows. The audience at the New Inn loves them
and at one point there were punters doing Yoga rolls in the aisles.
Well, we are talking Easingwold here, folks..
This time there were no solos from Tupplington, MWA lead singer.
Instead, Adi, their ex-bass player's other band, Dunno, came on for a
half-hour set of covers. They set the stage for
the "big" attraction from York. A standout was Whisky In The Jar, the
old Irish drinking song made legendary by Thin Lizzy. Their music is
metallic in a similar vein to MWA's, so their energetic set was a
perfect intro. Aidi holds his bass slightly lower than a grass snake's
bollocks and his four piece rocks like the bloody kasbah, so to speak..
Unofficially, this MWA set was for drummer Pedro Croft's 30th birthday - 29ish, anyway - and he wore a black wig that made him look like an alien plant had sprouted from the top of his bonce and was about to
strangle him to death unless he sprayed the thing with paraquat - and
bloody fast. The fact that he didn't sweat to death was probably down
to the succession of evil-looking, brightly coloured vodka-based
cocktails passed from the crowd at worryingly short intervals. They
upped rather than downed his energy levels and he played like a
veritable demon..
Tupplington was on fine form, despite smoking more ciggies than a laboratory beagle on speed. How it doesn't f*&% up his voice is
anyone's guess, but it doesn't. (Shut it, Harding, you twat. It didn't
exactly crap up Sinatra's vocals, did it?) Anyway, MWA's customary
blend of AC/DC (HIghway to Hell), Bon Jovi (Bad Medicine) and Iron
Maiden (The Trooper) covers meshed perfectly with self-concocted songs
like BIN and Final Chapter and the brand new Broken Arms. This time
two of the band, Ash and bassist Smelliott Elliott showed off their
new state of the art UHF radio packs, allowing them to walk into the
audience and interact with their hysterical fans. I've been at Who
gigs where the punters were quieter than this bunch of New Inn
loonies. When the lads belted out The Proclaimers 500 Miles, one of
their most popular couveurs, the massed pissheads nearly rioted.
During the song, Elliott ambled off to the bog and kept playing
throughout, not missing a single note. That really is a first. Let's
hope it's a last, too. What WOULD happen if he ended up throttling his
guitar with bog roll?.
Anyhow, it was a stonking gig and a great time was had by all, especially tentacle-topped Pedro, who was up for more even when the
customary encores and not so customary jam bash with Adi and some
bloke called Scotty from another band called The Daftness had ended.
Now that, folks, is rock 'n' roll. This was another classic gig from
MWA and may there be plenty more. We want them here and we want them
NOW.

You know, I've heard that a couple of other York bands have breathed a sigh of releif that Megawatt has finished - and a few ven=ues too! I think we'll take that as a compliment to our ignorance, then............
