Antigone Rising, and it's members individually, Beth Hart, Rob Thomas, Ani Difranco, Ben Harper, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Bonnie Raitt, Patty Griffin, Allison Kraus, Natalie Merchant, Melissa Ferrick, Edwin McCain, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Reba McEntire, Willy Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Kris Delmhorst, Chris Pureka, Brandi Carlile, Ray Lamontagne, Kelly Clarkson, Prince, Dave Matthews, and newest to the list, JoDee Messina...GOOD LORD that girl can sing, and what an amazing performer, until recently I had no idea!
My first concert was Reba. I learned to sing with my pink tape player under the covers. Every night it was Reba’s No Rumors album. I didn’t want my mom to hear me so I closed my door and pulled the covers over my head. I flipped that tape at least 5 times before finally falling asleep. I sang every note until I could sing it just like her.
I was raised on Willy, Kenny, Reba, Dolly, and Johnny. I have an uncle that looks like Kenny and one that looks like Willy. I grew up with a big family in a small town. I spent my summers at county fair and was president of my 4-H club. My snicker doodles won first place at the state fair. They were just thawed out from the same batch that won county fair. My mom made sure each one looked exactly the same, apparently that matters. I have trophies with goats and chickens on the top, and EVERY year I won the best-dressed goat contest.
We moved to the city when I was 12. I kept pictures of the country on my closet walls above my boots. I have since adjusted to city life and continue to toggle between the two. I was a dancer and a four-sport athlete. I attended a major university, I sing and write country and folk-rock. I was introduced to Ani Difranco and Melissa Ferrick in college. I knew there had to be a place for me somewhere between Ani and Reba and I guess that is how I would describe my style. I can still sing like Reba but have found my own voice. I have played amazing venues to amazing crowds.
I’ve had my heart broken more than once and always spend way too much time recouping. I can still cry over most of those breaks. I always have a dog, at least one. My pups are a pug named Fender and a boxer/hound dog named Roadie. I prefer flip-flops. I live for Nebraskan sunsets and harvest moons. I text too much, but know how to remain present.
I miss my big family more than anything. I have lost too many relatives to alcoholism, and am a survivor of domestic violence. I live in New York and call Nashville home. After all, home is where your mama lives!
I appreciate all of the support I have received more than I could ever indicate here. I am lucky. I’m living on soul-fire these days, so I’m sure I’ll see you soon! Leave me a note and tell me how ya feel.
