I realise more every day how lucky I am to be able to play one of the world’s most versatile and beautiful musical instruments. My classical training has given me the technique and discipline to learn several musical traditions and fiddle styles from around the globe. I began this journey after I graduated from music college, starting with Klezmer music, and have since studied in depth and performed folk, gypsy and classical music from Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East.
I have been fortunate to have had some wonderful teachers have helped me on my way: Jerre Gibson in Glasgow who gave me the confidence and enthusiasm needed to perform Mozart and Bach while I got my academic music degree at Edinburgh University; Diana Cummings who showed me at Trinity College of Music, London how to practise, Simon Blendis who made me really honestly listen to the sound my violin is capable of; my school friend and inspiration, Sophie Solomon who opened the first doors for me to the world of Jewish music and showed me how to make a violin weep, Lebanese singer Abdul Salam Khier who patiently shares with me his passion for classical Arabic music, Cahit Baylav who is introducing me to Turkish classical and folk music and of course I am constantly learning from all the talented musicians I am privileged to be making music with.
