Melani Brown was born in Bismark, North Dakota with a chronic case of rose-tinted eyes.
As she grew up Melani fell in love with pictures, both still and moving, and found herself chasing these pictures all over the world working on Desperate Housewives, several international documentaries, television commercials, various Hallmark movies and most notably a stint on the Kill Bill set in China. Melani is also a keen writer and director of her own short movies. In the last five years she has fully utilized tiny budgets to write and direct a number of quirky little shorts, several of which have won awards and acclaim on the short film circuit. Melani’s short films have recently appeared in various highly esteemed collections and publications, including the Portland Documentary and Experimental Festival (2008), Perpetual Art Machine (2007) and the Journal of Short Film (Vol.11) A self-taught camera woman Melani has had the good fortune to work with many innovative and inspiring directors .
Melani and her cameras now call Portland, Oregon, home. Though committed to film, Melani has also developed into an incredibly talented and successful photographer. In the last few years she has shot and charmed many artists and musicians both local and international. Her impressive client list includes Bon Iver, Rosie Thomas, Nick Jaina, The Builders and the Butchers, Laura Gibson and a host of other small wonders. Melani’s work has been published widely with centerfolds in Readymade Magazine and NME amongst others.
Each of Melani’s unique and captivating photographs tell a story. Sets are carefully arranged to compliment the subject’s personality, light is shaped and manipulated to coerce the viewer deep into the photograph and each picture displays an open-handed commitment to capturing much more than a mere moment. Melani anticipates romance in the smallest exchanges, finds a whimsical beauty in the everyday and reads her friends like a series of well-worn love songs. She searches for the story at the bottom of every coffee cup and her photography keenly reflects this rare ability to see beyond a subject, to the fairytale, crouching just beneath.
