Virtues: a distinctive voice and moderately dexterous fingers.
Vice: making music. started at the age of 7, roughly a year after she
started bugging her parents daily to buy her a piano.
Inspirations: strange Bartok melodies and sexy Blondie beats mixed with
a little PJ Harvey, Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush for good measure.
Weakness: despite a cheerful disposition, she cant make happy music
to save herself.
Dislikes: major keys.
Name dropping: support spots for the likes of Alex Lloyd, Ben Folds,
Sleepy Jackson, Ben Lee, Little Birdy and Pete Murray
its the way you go not where you go
The Destiny Motor Inn is the space between what is and what could be.
Situated on a long and dusty tour road, roughly midway between Brisbane
and Sydney, its the point at which its further to turn back on yourself than it is to see the journey through.
don't believe the hype (and that way you dont have to buy into the
bullshit either)
At the end of one of these tours, Melanie sat in the mastering suite of
a renowned recording engineer in Sydney contemplating the journey of a
music maker. Id just come off a festival where Id shared the bill with the likes of White Stripes, Lamb and Jet. Depending on your point of view or whom you asked, Id either climbed the heights of a little local ladder or snatched the bottom rung of an immeasurably longer one.
In conversation, we decided that with so many peaks and troughs, it must be a life about the journey and not the destination - all for the privilege of meeting people and the magic that you sometimes create. That way, the success of a moment becomes a
choice and not the decision of a critic, a fan or a man with a golden pen.
and dont let an ocean stand in your way
Now residing in London, Melanie has formed a live band and performs regularly around London at venues including the Water Rats Theatre, the Borderline, Plan B and Mau Mau. With technology at her fingertips, Melanie is recording her debut album At the Destiny Motor Inn in London and mixing down at the same time in Brisbane not far from her hometown, Surfers Paradise, Australia. Tracks are transferred via the internet to her co-producer Glenn Alanrock Marshall and returned to her a few days later mixed and ready for any final tweaks that may be decided upon. Its a creative process that works for her, giving each song a unique approach and one which gives her the best of both worlds thousands of miles apart.
it's the people you meet
The end may be still out of sight, but more people are coming along for the ride.
