Influences
Mélanie is influenced by the traditional music she was raised with, as well as the many artists she has discovered along the way. Her focus is mainly on songwriting with a bare-bones approach. She is influenced by legends such as Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and Neil Young as well as contemporary acts such as Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays and el Torpedo, Feist and Gordie Sampson.
***
Mélanie Samson believes in real music. Her self-released "La Route courbée" delivers a back-to-basics product highlighting her songwriting and "killer voice."
Samson, a Cape Breton native based in Western Newfoundland's historic Port-au-Port Peninsula, began her musical career over ten years ago, performing an original song in the sold-out "Sounds from the Shore" concert, sharing the stage with Natalie MacMaster and Cyril MacPhee, among others.
In 2006, she began writing in her native French, earning herself a place on the promotional CDs "Chez Nous" and "Encore chez nous", produced by l'Association regionale de la cote Ouest (ARCO), featuring internationally rewnowned artists the Port-au-Port such as Ti-Jardin and Bernie Felix. The CD was launched in 2007 during Cape St.George's long-standing bilingual folk festival "Une Longue veillée" to great public appeal. It led to a series of concerts in St. John's and showcases on CFSX Stephenville and Radio-Canada.
Mélanie's full-length album "La Route courbée" features twelve original songs in a mix of French and English. Her acoustic, folk-pop songs speak of rural life and cultural identity.
