Termed a young chanteuse by Salt Lake Citys City Weekly newspaper after the 1999 release of her first single Why?, Melea has been entertaining and pleasing audiences for years.
Although her first love has always been singing, her first public performances were actually as a dancer, with performances throughout the Rocky Mountain region and on the West Coast. But after seven years as a dancer and instructor, Melea turned her energies to music at age 15, both vocally and artistically.
In late 1998, her musical skills were strong enough to land her a spot on MTVs original television program, The Cut. As one of 160 budding artists chosen from more than 10,000 entries, Melea was given the opportunity to perform one of her songs before a live studio audience while being judged by three industry professionals.
Viewers of the program saw an obviously impressed Big Boy, disc jockey with Power 106 FM in Los Angeles, state, If youre 16, you can only get better. And in spite of not being the type of person who likes slow songs, rap recording artist Canibus claimed that Meleas performance was blowin and that he felt (Meleas) energy during her on-air appearance. Even program host Lisa Left Eye Lopez of TLC was impressed, telling Melea privately that she would go far in the music industry.
Melea has since
been a Top 5 finalist for the “Utah Idol” Competition sponsored by Fox 13 and 97.1 KZHT-FM (2006)
been featured as the “Hometown Hero” on 97.1 KZHT-FM which featured all of her original music on their website- www.971zht.com (2006)
been a featured performing artist at the 2004 Salt Lake City Marathon, sponsored by KTVX Channel 4.
been awarded as a runner-up in the Best of Utah competition in 2003
worked and recorded with well-known engineer/mixer/ producer David Sussman; his resume including work for such artists as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Michael Jackson and U2.
been a featured guest artist on five commercially available recordings
performed as a featured soloist at a variety of venues during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, including before members of the IOC and Vice President Dick Cheney;
landed a strong second place finish in the American Idol Utah competition sponsored by 94.9 KZHT-FM/KSTU Fox 13 during the summer of 2002;
was in top 50 of American Idols first season (2001); receiving vocal compliments from Simon, Paula, and Randy.
performed as a featured soloist in England, France, Switzerland, Mexico and Chicago as part of several song and dance performing arts groups;
all while attending/graduating from high school and now as a junior at the University of Utah majoring in Broadcast Journalism.
With a voice that is reminiscent of a young Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey, Meleas voice is surprisingly rich and soulful. She has also developed a strong and polished stage presence, one that showcases her qualities as an entertainer.
Melea has been writing songs for nearly a decade, turning out dozens of hip-hop and pop lyrics and compositions, including her recent recordings of Back To You, Take Me Away and My Man. Her real long-term potential, however, is likely highlighted best by her thoughtful pieces entitled Cant Get Enough, Closer, and You Never Gave Me Your Love- songs that highlight her powerful voice and her skills as an accomplished pianist.
