MELEE BEATS is the alias for producer, remixer, songwriter, and multiinstrumentalist Nic Bertino (born October 3rd, 1985), best known for his pop-dance production style. Bertino’s combination of 80’s synthpop/new wave, disco, and rhythm and blues has been compared to Prince, Daft Punk, and the Junior Boys. His signature disco pop anthem “Distraction” has landed him an international following and airplay on BBC Radio 1.
Bertino released his first full length album in 2005, an instrumental house and techno driven-concept project titled “STAR.” Shortly after, he would release “BEL ESTEEM,” his second full length album. He flirted with pop themes on the new release, incorporating vocal hooks and shorter arrangements. The result was a 13 track excerise in progressive dance music.
2008 brought Bertino’s breakthrough album “TRIUMPH,” which expanded on the theme of “BEL ESTEEM” in the form of 16 tracks, ranging from the heady funk sound of “Excuse Me Pt II” to the dancefloor anthem “Girlhype.” The new album included catchy vocals, full arrangements, new instruments, and unprecedented production techniques.
Bertino is currently finishing two new MELEE BEATS projects, an EP titled “HOT DAMAGE!” and the next studio LP titled “I AM LOST.” He has been working closely with Los Angeles-based hip hop artist SEAN REX on productions for his new EP titled “RAD,” and has completed remixes for CINEMAX (”Smudged”) in early 2009. On April 1st, 2009, it was announced that MELEE BEATS was nominated for Outstanding Pop at the 2009 Sacramento Music Awards.Find out more at the official Melee Beats website.
