For nearly a decade, Melissa Cox has been captivating audiences with her powerful mezzo-soprano voice, skillful guitar and mandolin work and commanding stage presence. Melissa pens poignant, poetically cryptic lyrics and frames them within hook-driven, intense melodies. Hailed as "a cross between Grace Slick and Loreena McKennitt" (Sing Out! Magazine), Melissa is influenced by a wide range of artists, including Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Bjork, Simon & Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin, Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, and many more.
Born and raised in Delaware, Melissa began singing classically at the age of six. When she picked up her father's guitar at fourteen, her focus shifted to folk, alternative, rock, New Age and Celtic.
Melissa has performed at some of the largest festivals/events and best venues across the East Coast, and has shared the stage with several national and international artists, including the Spin Doctors, Sister Hazel, Catie Curtis, Cyril Neville (of the Neville Bros.), Makem Brothers, Young Dubliners, Mieka Pauley, and many more.
Melissa was voted Best Singer/Songwriter of 2008 by Spark Magazine, and Best Musical Folk Artist of 2008 by Delaware Division of the Arts. Her song "elijah, elijah" was a finalist in the 2004 Song of the Year Contest, and she was runner-up for Best Female Vocalist in Out and About Magazine's 2007 Music Awards.
Melissa performs at a variety of venues, including festivals, fairs, coffeehouse and concert series, Unitarian Universalist churches, house concerts, singer/songwriter events and more.
