I am Mom to a wonderful son (Jackson who is 12), Wife of a fabulous husband (David who is eternally young), Friend to folks I am lucky to know, and the owner of Max the golden retriever.
After 10 years in the publishing industry I retired to be 'mom'. When Jackson entered school full-time, songwriting and recording was what filled my day. It was very hard for my 'playmate' to go off to school and leave me behind. I think I look forward to holidays even more than he does. My family is very supportive of my creative side and I have been blessed to meet up with and work with very talented artists.
Sixteen years of my early life was spent living in Nashville, as Melissa Fruehling, surrounded by musically gifted people, soaking it all in. Then I met and married the love of my life. After moving all over the USA, David, Jackson and I settled in Surrey, England and lived there for the last seven years, and in the summer of 2009 we moved back to the USA and chose Chapel Hill, NC as our next home. In England we lived in an English cottage in a little village and walked to do our shopping from home. The village was quaint and tranquil and surrounded by the historical (HUNDREDS of years old) and the modern. In our new town in Chapel Hill we also find the quaint and tranquil. Not so much is old here in Chapel Hill, but the town has the youthful energy that surrounds an American college town, combined with the easy calm of a small town. We continue to enjoy all that life has to offer. ========================================================== In addition to family, friends and music, my other favourite passion is collecting antique poetry books and classic literature. I love the pocket sized poetry books that are 100+ years old… they are my Victorian iPods. I love when I find a well worn and maintained book of verses that has a long tender inscription handwritten by someone’s lover or friend, or when a book has the lineage of who owned it written in the front, or pencil notes in the margins. In addition to poetry, I collect Dickens and I am the giddy owner of a complete set of David Copperfield published in it’s original monthly parts. I adore Virginia Woolf and collect many poets and authors she discusses in her book ‘A Room Of One’s Own’. In keeping with the thought of that title, I am astoundingly lucky to have A Studio Of My Own, to escape into for writing, reading and recording. Women have come far from Frances Burney's time (mentioned in Virginia’s book). Frances wrote her first novel ‘Evelina’ in 1778 and published it anonymously because it was “unthinkable at the time that a young woman would deliberately put herself into the public eye by writing”. And yes, I have a 1794 edition of ‘Evelina’ in my collection. And yes, now I am here on MySpace “deliberately putting myself into the public eye”. I am appreciative of my freedoms and my luxuries and super appreciative of anyone who has read to this point!!! XOXOX; Melissa Israel
