So, here’s the quick version of my life. I was raised in Roanoke, VA; there’s nothing like the Blue Ridge Mountains. I’ve got a big, fantastic, loving family; our favorite thing to do is laugh. They have always been such a source of strength and encouragement for me. I can’t imagine life without them. Bob, Fran, Michelle, Kevin, Kimberly and Meagan – thank you.
Music was “in me” from the start. My mom swears that even as a baby, when I heard music, I would “wiggle.” As a child, some of my favorite memories are singing with my grandmother and “putting on shows” with my older brother and sister. I still can’t believe our air guitar band, “Penny Lotion,” never made it (too funny the things you do when you’re a kid)!
I can still remember the moment I seriously thought, “This is something I could actually do for a living.” It was the first time I heard Amy Grant sing; I instantly fell in love with her voice. For some reason, something within me clicked and I went, “Yep, that’s what I want to do.” So, here I am years later still saying, “Yep, this is what I want to do.”
Not sure how I ever heard about Berklee College of Music, but I was determined to attend. My SAT scores weren’t the greatest (hard to believe, I know), so I got an invitation to come to Boston and audition. Talk about the little country girl hitting the big city; I had never seen anything like it. Luckily, they didn’t hold it against me that I couldn’t sight read to save my life and accepted me. I still can’t read music, but we’ll keep that secret to ourselves. Attending Berklee really opened my mind, personally and musically. I worked with so many talented teachers, students, and groups. I wouldn’t trade those years for anything.
After Boston, I figured that there were three major music cities to choose from; Los Angeles, Nashville, or New York. I chose Nashville. That’s when I actually started writing music. Writing songs became therapy, in a way, for me. It’s a release. I tend to write about my experiences and things that I have gone through or witnessed. I released my first CD, Simple Life, in August 2003. I worked with some incredible musicians and had such a great experience. I’m extremely proud of that project.
About that same time, I also fell crazy in love with which led me to Los Angeles. I had considered the move to Los Angeles for years and Tanya was the final tug. I’ve been in Los Angeles since February 2004 and I love it. I mean, really, how cool is it that I could go snowboarding and hit the beach all in the same day if I really wanted to. The weather is just amazing. Of course, you have to deal with the 405 traffic as a trade off, but right now I’m willing to make that trade. I can’t see myself living here forever, however, it truly feels like where I need to be right now.
I’ve been so fortunate to “stumble” into the positive music scene here in Los Angeles. I’ve spent the past three years traveling to a lot of New Thought churches and sharing my music. It’s been such a great experience and I love doing it. I’ve also had some success with several songs placements from Simple Life into television shows and an Independent Film, “The Sensei.” I released my second cd "Why Can't I" last August and have been working hard to promote the new material. This project was a huge amount of work and “journey” for me. It always amazes me how much I learn about myself when taking on such a project.
Let’s see, what else? I love to play racquetball and took up snowboarding; I can’t get enough of either. I’m a firm believer of the “what you put out, you get back” theory of life (thanks to my big sister), so I truly try to put out nothing but love. I try to live life in the moment and not stress too much over anything… note, I said “try.” I write music because it soothes my soul somehow. I’m not one of those songwriters who sits down everyday and “works” at writing. I still don’t understand how it works for me, but I swear it’s more about “me experiencing” and then writing about it. Does that make sense?
I am truly blessed in this wonderful thing we call life. I’m not 100% sure what happens when our time is up and that scares me a bit, but I am certain that just because someone has left doesn’t mean you still can’t be in communication with them or sense their presence often. I’ve had some pretty amazing experiences when it comes to that kind of stuff. I do know whatever it is... it’s all good!
Music to me is a connectedness, it connects thoughts, it connects feelings, it connects emotions. Most importantly, I think it connects people. I am so grateful for how music connects me to life, truly is my passion, and allows me to share with others.
So, that’s pretty much my story… If there is anything else you want to know, just ask! Shoot Me an email at breatheinmusic@earthlink.net
