I Am a singer, and I Am a Check Out All the Celebrity 'Veggie Testimonials' at PETA.org
The difference between a singer and a star is the amount of emotion, energy, passion, charisma, love, and devotion that is poured into their work. All of these qualities are willingly dedicated to all that Melissa Martinez writes and sings about, in order to provide the listener with a truly personal journey back into what love is all about.
Until recently, there were a vast array of musicians that had original sound and styles. It seems as if everything sounds the same these days. Every artist is doing what every other artist is doing, and listeners are being forced to listen to what gets airplay. Well, it’s time to break the cycle and Melissa Martinez writes music in such a way, that the transition would not only be easy, but completely enjoyable.
Melissa Martinez is a young, soulful, urban songstress with a powerful voice that promises to be unlike anything that can be heard today. Her tone has a pleasant raspy, bluesy, gospel-like quality that is paired with remarkable emotion and passion that compel you to keep listening. Her song lyrics are so easy to relate to, that they can be dubbed as a soundtrack to the average person’s love life. Vocally, she has been compared to Jill Scott, Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu, and Sade, but with a latin twist. Her influences include Etta James, Mary J. Blige, and Celine Dion.
Melissa was raised in New York City, where she quickly developed a serious love of music and made it the focus of her life. Growing up she kept herself busy by singing and acting in school plays and drawing. When she was fifteen years old, while visiting a local church with her family, she discovered an urban youth choir called the Mass City Choir and knew that she needed to be a part of it. She joined the choir and soon became one it’s lead soloists. The choir consisted of about 50 members, who went on to perform at the McDonald’s Gospelfest auditions, and conduct large plays and shows for the community and other churches in the tri-state area. Upon graduation, she decided that she needed to return to New York City from Upstate New York to pursue her music career and her studies in Art and Design, and was accepted to the Fashion Institute of Technology to study Fashion Illustration. While studying there, she kept herself busy by performing at open-mic bars and karaoke competitions throughout lower Manhattan. She also became a featured soloist in F.I.T.’s Gospel Choir. She went on to compete at F.I.T.’s Talent Show, where she won first place, beating out dancers, singers, and other miscellaneous talent. In 1999, she had the opportunity to perform at Showtime at the Apollo’s Amateur Night, where she won first place. “I feel so honored to have performed and won at such a legendary venue, where many so many stars were born”, said Melissa regarding the big win. She went on to say, “Right then I knew I had to go all the way with this. It was so amazing to have had people asking me for my autograph when I left the place”. She started writing her own songs and singing at weddings and different events. In 2003, she started doing reference vocals for a production team named The Junito Perez Project, when she met Damon-Anthony Reed of Nightflyte Enterprises. After hearing her, he decided to collaborate with her on making the demo provided with this biography.
Now, whether it be a New York City open-mic spot, or a world-wide tour, Melissa is ready to take the world on that journey back into love. Her bluesy texture is vintage yet refreshing, and will make anyone feel like they are experiencing what she is singing about, as if she is an actress that utilizes her voice to portray her emotions.
