Influences
For Alisha's birthday the girls went to see Midnight, Alpha Blondie and Jimmy Cliff. When the girls shop for dollar records they pick up Third World, Wes Montgomery, Amahd Jamal, Nancy Wilson, Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. When they're hanging out they listen to the above and Black Uhuru, Belle and Sebastian, Lauryn Hill, Ninah Simone, and various musical scores. During practice, they often refer to the I-Trees for harmonic inspiration.
Sounds Like
One girl split into three voices. Six strings, and a sax.
Alisha was a lonely little girl for nine years. She sang a lot when she was alone. But then she got a baby sister named Nikki. She was afraid to hold her because she thought she might drop her. Nikki slept so much, and Alisha was impatient for her to grow a little so that they could play. She thought babies were sort of boring. Nikki did grow a little, and soon Alisha could dress her up or pretend that the carpet was shark-infested water and that the bed was a boat and that they could take turns falling in and saving each other from the sharks ("Graaaab my haaaaaand!"). A couple years into their fun and games came Ninah. She was at first a boring sleeping baby but caught on to the recreational value of sisters pretty quick. Alisha liked to take pictures of the girls and make long-ass home movies about parakeets lost in the woods. They would go on hikes around the block and bring hard boiled eggs and fishy crackers for sustenance. Twelve years, two more siblings and seven street addresses later, these three found themselves naturally coming together to make music. So now, at 17, 19 and 28, they're collecting dollar records and figuring out harmonies.
I'm playing this Friday night @ 9pm at Surf City Saloon. It's being put on by OC Magazine and is a very important show for me. I would greatly appreciate it if you could come out and support me! And if you'd be so kind, I'd appreciate you passing this on in a bulletin.
I'm playing with TopShelf this Wednesday, October 3, at the Gaslamp in Long Beach. We play from 8-10pm, and there's a $5 burger and beer bargain that night. The burgers are DELICIOUS!!! Hope to see you there :)
