m elody. was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 24, 1982. She is the eldest of four sisters. Since the age of four, she dreamed of one day being a singer in Japan. melody. began lessons such as ballet, piano, vocal training, jazz dance, etc.., and enjoyed performing on stage since early childhood. She began modeling at age 16, appearing in various Japanese TV commercials, advertisements and magazines. In late 2001, melody. moved to Tokyo to pursue her dream as a singer.
melody. began her career as a singer in Japan in February 2003 with her first major debut single, "Dreamin' Away". Her pure and fresh soprano has been acclaimed as "Platinum Voice" throughout the country since her debut, and she was featured as the guest singer in the song "miss you" by m-flo, a popular Japanese music producer and hip-hop/R&B artist group. Her first album "Sincerely" released in January 2004 ranked 3rd, and her DVD released in May the same year ranked 4th, both in national hit music chart (Oricon) during the first week of sales. melody.'s 6th single "realize", released in August 2005, became a smash hit overnight upon being chosen as the theme song of a popular TV drama "Dragon Zakura" on TBS. Her 8th single, "Lovin' U", was used as a song for the Raycious cosmetics commercial. The song "Our Journey" (included the B-side of the single "Lovin' U"), was the theme song of the 2006 movie "Gen Yu Den" starring actress Rena Tanaka. The same year, melody. was casted as the character "Yumi" in Electronic Art's Need for Speed Carbon. Her song "Feel the Rush" is used in the game as well. melody. made an appearance in a Japanese Subaru Forester commercial in spring and summer 2007, in which her 9th single "Finding my Road", and her latest album title song "READY TO GO!", were used as soundtracks. In April 2007, melody. began hosting the weekly Japanese music television program called J-Melo, which is available on NHK World TV. The program is recorded entirely in English, and it introduces Japanese music and artists to audiences around the world. melody.'s 10th single, "Love Story", released on May 2007, was the soundtrack to the TBS drama series "Kodoku No Kake - Itoshikihito Yo", starring actress Kyoko Hasegawa. melody. is also featured in the Tsutsumi Kyouhei's tribute album "The Popular Music", released in July 2007, with the song "Manatsu No Dekigoto".
