Melopoetica was formed in 2003 with the aim of creating fresh and innovative performances of repertoire from the late sixteenth century to the classical works of Mozart and Haydn. Since 2003 the London based ensemble has been playing to audiences worldwide, and are fast developing a reputation for unique interpretations and performances that truly engage with and move their audiences.
They have performed in festivals throughout England and Europe, including the London Handel Festival, the Hexham Abbey Festival, Greenwich Early Music Festival, Alte Music Feldkirchen and the Tilford Bach Society. Associations with other ensembles led them to play in Greece and Sweden. They have recently returned from a month long tour of South Africa, and have future concerts planned at the Handel House Museum with singer Claire Troth, City Music Society and Farnham Classic Concerts.
Individually, and as an ensemble, the members have performed in many major venues in London and throughout Europe. Melopoetica has been invited to play in 2007 in renowned festivals, venues in England, Sweden, Portugal, Greece, South Africa and Mozambique.
As a professional ensemble Melopoetica has worked with eminent musicians such as Richard Gwilt - London Baroque, James Johnstone - Florilegium, Susan Sheppard - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Allison McGillivray - English Concert, Philip Thorby and Rebecca Miles, amongst others.
Melopoetica were awarded the title ”English Concert Junior Fellow” by Trinity College of Music in 2006.
Melopoetica is a term used by scholars and composers of the 17th and 18th centuries alike, to describe the relationship between rhetoric and music. Melopoetica or musica poetica, from the Greek melos= melody and poetica= poetry, is very closely related with the baroque doctrine of the affections (affektenlehre) and the musical pathos. To move, affect and stir the passions is the main aim of the baroque with the ultimate goal of an edifying experience.
Melopoetica is to perform rhetorically under the baroque mandate of affectus movere.
