   Melanie's Blurbs
About me:
Who I'd like to meet:

The Facts
My name is Melanie, but nearly everyone shortens that to Mel. Someone years ago told me my name was hard to remember because it had more than two syllables. Though I think maybe he was just making excuses for being forgetful, there might be something to that. Mel seems to stick more.

Into music the most, movies a lot, and reading in what little time I have left. Some days I want to be a writer. Other days, not so much.

I'd be a pop-culture snob if I didn't like so much cheesy shit.

Computers fascinate me.

Conversationalist from hell.

Libra, Taurus rising. (Sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't.)

Pretty much an Atheist at this point. Logic and Occam, baby.

Half couch potato, half social butterfly. (Ok, maybe it's more like 60/40.)

A fruit fly. (Sort of like a fag hag, but different.)

Sense of humor that ranges from dry to sarcastic to warped and wrong to all out wacky, all within about 5 minutes of each other. (And despite the photographic evidence to the contrary, I laugh constantly. I just don't let pictures of me smiling escape my grasp very often, as when I smile my eyes disappear and you can see my fangs. Yes, I have natural fangs. It ain't pretty people.)

Smoker. Sometimes drinker.

The polar opposite of a neat freak.

Completely political - proudly liberal - and completely apathetic.

Total nerd in the best sense of the word.

Had my nose pierced for my 30th birthday present to myself.

Not shy. At all. By any stretch.

Not 'girly', but still a girl.

A big kid at heart but gainfully employed. I had to go get a grownup job, though we will not say who that is for here. I'm still doing a little bit of work for my best friend (www.diverseuniverse.net and www.citydweller.net) and working for myself, though I don't really have much time left for that anymore, and I'm not taking on any new projects at the moment (theprojectgeek.com).

Shallow and deep, sometimes in the same moment.

Contradictory.

Poor most of the time. I gave up the corporate money in LA for the happier life in Cleveland, and though I'm poorer than ever, I'm also quite happy. (Even with the grownup job, this is still sadly true.)

Is in possession of a boyfriend who's a video game freak and likes sci-fi, but he also likes a lot of the things I like. I love him very much though many days I'm plotting his demise as I clean up the coffee grounds he spilled on the counter for the millionth time.

Also has 2 great big shedding psychotic freaky cats, who I adore. If you happen to be around me when I see a cat or even a picture of a cat, you will finally be convinced that I am, in fact, a girl.

Spends far too much time in front of the computer. FAR TOO MUCH.

If I could go to a concert every night, I probably would. Time, energy, and finance restraints make even the occasional show a hard press these days though.

Parentheses are my favorite literary device. (In case you couldn't tell already.)

Sometimes mixes perspectives when writing descriptions of myself, despite status as a grammar nerd.

There's so much more to tell you, but I'm even bored with me by now.

Dig Music Elliott Smith, Tori Amos, The Dresden Dolls, The Geraldine Fibbers, Portishead, Faith No More, Husker Du, old Liz Phair, Marilyn Manson (well, until the last few years, I've even given up trying to defend a lot of the latest stuff), Pavement, Ruby, Nirvana, The Catherine Wheel, Rob Dickinson, Rufus Wainwright, M. Ward, Boss Hog, Magnetic Fields, Ani DiFranco (mostly her older stuff), Nick Drake, Love / Hate, Depeche Mode, Jane's Addiction, Moonwater, Nicholas Megalis, Queensryche, Blondie, Nine Inch Nails, Elvis Costello, Prick, Liam Lynch, Jeff Buckley, INXS (only with Michael Hutchence though... this other crap doesn't count), New Order, Garbage, British Sea Power, God's Water, The Datsuns, Aimee Mann, Placebo, Mother Love Bone, The Cure, Archers of Loaf, Republica, Damien Rice, Ryan Adams, It Could Be Nothing, David Bowie, Radiohead (up to Kid A then skip to In Rainbows), Self, Alice In Chains, Harry Chapin, Film School, The Gossip, Neutral Milk Hotel, That Dog, Bell X1, Blur, Quasi, PJ Harvey, Badly Drawn Boy, Beastie Boys, Vain, Tricky, Joy Division, Red Hot Chili Peppers, X, Blind Melon, Joseph Arthur, Motley Crue, Pearl Jam (mostly 10 years old or more), The Bravery, lots and lots of 80's pop, a bit more of the cheesy 80's hair metal I can never truly give up on, lots and lots of indie rock, a bit of the shoegaze variety, and tons more that I can't think of right now - if it moves me or makes me move I probably dig it

FTM Book Vol. 1 = OUT NOW!!!!!

About FTM Book Vol. 1
FTM Book Vol 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life is an easy-to-understand, yet comprehensive primer on FTM issues such as:

What is an FTM?
How do FTMs see themselves?
Appearance
Stages in Transition
Surgeries Available
Common Personal Histories
Violence
Discrimination
Health Issues
Counseling
Relationships
Common Legal Issues

We've worked hard to help create definitions that will help you talk about trans issues with others, including terms for body parts unique to the FTM and by naming the stages of transitioning. This book is great for anyone who who is having trouble understanding the lifestyle or choices of a transperson. When we first began dating, we were shocked that there was no one place that Aaron could turn to show me "See, this explains what being an FTM means." We hope that this book will be a good start.

Best of all, when you order FTM Book Vol. 1: A Basic Introduction to Transman Life you can feel good knowing that sales of the book are being used to fund more research to help FTMs and their partners get through the challenges of their lives. This is a great book for youself and for anyone you know who could use a little more understanding. Also, you can help teach others about trans issues by donating copies to your local high schools, colleges, LGBT centers and libraries.

Get your copy here: http://www.cafepress.com/muskegon115

FTM Book Vol. 2 is also in the works (more focus on relationship issues etc), as well as a few other things to be announced...
