Latin Percussion is proud to announce that the internationally acclaimed organizers of percussion workshops, KoSA, which runs annual week-long live-in seminars in Vermont and Cuba, has bestowed its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award on Memo Acevedo, citing his tireless contribution to the world of percussion and percussion education. Prior to moving to New York in the mid-nineties, Memo lived in Toronto, where his educational activities at Humber College of Music, his Latin music radio show, and his bands, including Banda Brava, became treasured institutions. The move to New York saw Memo instructing at Drummers Collective and at New York University, the latter is where he still teaches. In 2004, he joined LP’s Education Department.
Memo continues to work in top New York area venues and he is relentless in his calling to educate young drummers in authentic Latin and Brazilian traditions. Accordingly, he is an integral part of the LP education and artist team.
The KoSA award recognizes a lifetime of service to culture and learning. KoSA Founder and Director Aldo Mazza puts it this way: “I believe that Memo Acevedo was an obvious candidate for our lifetime achievement award. Memo has had a long and impressive performance career, and he is a tireless advocate of percussion education—as can be seen in his latest capacity as Education Coordinator for LP.”
