General

August, die she must

April come she will
When streams are ripe and swelled with rain;
May, she will stay,
Resting in my arms again.

June, she'll change her tune,
In restless walks she'll prowl the night;
July, she will fly
And give no warning to her flight.

August, die she must,
The autumn winds blow chilly and cold;
September I'll remember
A love once new has now grown old.

My Interests:

Sleeping on the softest place anywhere, eating and begging
MusicMy mama's silly, silly songs with my name in them.
TelevisionWhat, and ruin my reputation? I'd rather sleep.
BooksThe law books I ate because my mama spent too much time paying attention to them and not to me.
HeroesFat people and people with thumbs, keys, and time to spend on walkers.

About me:

Merry Meet, and Merry Part, and Merry Meet Again.

Hello, my name is Diggity, and this website is all about me and how my mama loved me. I was 14 years old, and I was an above-average height tri-color beagle. I was born in Brighton, Colorado, on April 3, 1992. My last day was 08/05/2006 after a wonderful 14 years being with my owner.

My pack included my mama, my John (her husband), Amanda and Kaitlyn, Mama's Mama and Daddy Dog, and lots of other people my mommy knew, such as Garrett, Laura, Renee, Mikaela, Julie, Drew, Judy, Mabel, and Toby - and many more I enjoyed over the years. My best friend was the pizza man, and my worst enemy was the fix-it man (he made me shiver!)

Wow! What changes we experienced over the fourteen years -- from my bringing a wood chip from where she adopted me home in my mouth as a pup to the move the Michigan while she went to law school, to our homes in Boston, Massachusetts, and finally Saint Paul, Minnesota.

I loved Michigan. There were lots of places to run off-leash and chase other dogs and geese. Once, I tried walking on a pond! It was covered in duckweed, and I didn't realize it wasn't solid ground. I wound up learning to swim rather quickly.

I loved walking around Black Pond Woods near where we lived and in the woods and golf course nearby. (My mama ALWAYS cleaned up after me!) Throughout my life, off-leash dog parks were fun because I could go beg from the other dog owners.

When I was about a year old, mama, my friend Laura, and another friend and I went to Mackinac Island where there are no cars. I didn't like the boat ride over, but I could hardly believe how wonderful a day we had. We took a walk that lasted over eight hours! We climbed rocks and looked at trees and got to sniff at lots of food and horse poop.

In Boston, we walked and walked and walked - one time all they way from downtown to the Fenway where we lived. I also remember it because that's where I got into five pounds of Christmas cookie sugar. (It made my poop a magical green!) I also found out what children are and that my mama could get them to be nice and not pull my tail. After that, I loved children and always sat patiently so that they could feel how soft my ears were.

Here in Minnesota, my mama made me wear a plaid coat and put baby booties on my feet the first winter. We were COLD! By the next winter, though, we learned how to handle it (as long as you didn't let the salt and snow get stuck in your paws), and I loved to bound through the snowdrifts and run along, occasionally reaching down while running at top speed to catch a mouthful of yummmy snow.

One day, my mama, my John, and Amanda took me in the car. I loved to stick my nose out, but I always wondered if the car meant a trip to the vet or a 24-hour drive across country. This time, we went to a park, and there we saw an amazing sight: over 300 other beagles!

This was the Saint Paul Beagle Parade in honor of Peanuts creator Charles Schultz. I had my picture taken next to many boring sculptures and got to meet hundreds of other beautiful beagles and interesting-smelling people.

I was always an adventurer and free spirit, running through the hallways whenever she would open the door when I was young and letting her chase after me while I laughed. I would run with my butt tucked under and mama would laugh. She called me "Thunder Beagle" when I was running.

I could escape from absolutely any barricade. Once my mama blocked me in the bedroom with a big wooden chest and put my dog kennel (Chez Diggity) on top, but that didn't stop me. She tried putting up gates, putting baby locks on the cabinets, and just plain closing doors on me, but none of those worked.

One memorable time, she had me closed in the bedroom while she and my John were at work. I usually pretended to go along with this because I could sit on their big comfy bed, but this time there was a fire alarm.

I tried digging through the headboard and the screen, but when I got through I realized it was a pretty steep drop. I tried digging under the door, but I couldn't, so I tried digging through it. Finally, exasperated and annoyed with the piercing noise, I pulled the door knob out of the door, pulled the door open, broke through the patio screen and waited from my mama and my John on the patio where it was quiet.

My favorite pastime was eating almost everything that wasn't pickled. My favorite foods were peanut butter, pizza, guacamole, and any kind of meat. Of course, I loved the adventure of finding that special treat while out on walks - once I found a whole two-pound fish and another time I snagged an entire rotisserie chicken! Usually, mama took away my finds, but she always let me have that terrific winter treat: snow.

Before you get the impression that I was a crazy, naughty dog who ran around eating eveything in sight, you should know that my mama trained me VERY well. (Of course, my mana knew that you can't train beagles - you can only convince us to cooperate.) Picture me as a big giant nose on legs, and you wouldn't be too far off -- so it wasn't easy for her to keep me in line, but she did (with communication and understanding, never, ever violence). Everybody agreed that I was always gentle and well-behaved -- except when people left food in an accessible area and then left the room.

If I say so myself, I was one of the smartest dogs you would ever meet. Besides my ability to escape from anything intended to keep me cooped up, I could also unwind myself if I had wound my leash around something - ask yourself when was the last time you knew a dog who could do THAT! I could also open the refrigerator by myself and I understood a LOT of English.

Unlike other dogs who blindly and slavishly obey their mommies or daddies, I understood that if I wanted something I wasn't supposed to have I had a choice to take the treat and take the heat. My Daddy Dog (mama's papa) tried putting up an electric fence once. It gave me a warning before I would get zapped so I always knew what was coming. If I wanted to go for a freedom ride, I'd just take the shock. I knew I'd have to pay, but freedom was my middle name.

Other memories:

Once when I was just little, I fell asleep with my head on my mama's neck. She never stopped trying to get me to do it again.

Most of my life (until my back started to hurt), I slept curled up next to my mama's tummy - at least for a little while. When I thought she was asleep I would slip away and sleep at the foot of the bed. Like I said, hey, I liked my freedom. A lot.

I didn't like people to touch my feet, but I would let my mama do it. She said the tufts of fur on my feet were shaped like little stars.

Mama talked and sang to me all the time, and every time she sang a song with my name in it, I would smile. She sang "the Diggity Song" to me when I was put to sleep.

My John and I always had a strange relationship. He said he didn't like dogs and would try to avoid me and complain about me all the time. But then, he would turn around and play with me and give me cookies. On the day before I died I didn't want to eat, so my John made me an omelet. Later he gave me five bites of hot dog.

I lived the last year of my life with congestive heart failure, and the last four months of my life with daily subcutaneous fluids that my mama had to inject into my back. I didn't like it so she would snuggle me and give me lots of cookies. My doctor said that my mama when far and beyond what most people would do. I was always happy and smiling, always happy to see everyone, and I dragged my mama on walks down by the lake even when she thought I was too sick.

My mama and I had such an amazing bond that I let her put her face right next to mine and hug me or kiss my muzzle. I didn't lick faces, but I would lick hands if I really liked you. When my mama hugged me, I would push my head hard against her chest to hug her back.

I loved my mama and my John and my Kaitlyn and my Amanda and my Mama's Mama and Daddy Dog and all the other people I met. Anyone who liked dogs liked me, and everyone agreed that I was a deeply, deeply good dog. My mama says that I was smart, funny, independent, fun, curious, and adventurous. She also said that sometimes she would just look at me and her heart would swell up with a special kind of joy that nothing else could give her: Diggity Joy

Who I'd like to meet:
My idol that I saw at the Beagle Parade -- he was so fat that he had to be pulled in a wagon! My mama never let me get fat. I also want to meet a cat so I can sniff it all over. I did that one time and got scratched, but it was worth it.
