About me:

The Memphis Songwriters Association (MSA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1973 by a group of Memphis songwriters, including Memphis's own Estelle Axton, co-founder of Stax Records. (photo: Estelle Axton and Jim Stewart, taken from http://staxrecords.free.fr/estelleaxton.htm)

"Were it not for her, there's no way Stax could have become what it became,'' said David Porter, a songwriting legend who with co-writer Isaac Hayes composed scores of Stax hits including Sam and Dave's "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Coming."

Our members serve on a voluntary basis to promote, advance and help MSA songwriters in the composition of lyric and song; to work for better conditions in our profession, and to secure and protect the rights of MSA songwriters. All genres and experience levels welcome.

We host monthly meetings with guest speakers, monthly open mic nights, collaborative writing sessions and one-day periodic seminars focusing on improving our writing and business skills.

Come and join us at Memphis Originals (MO's) at Highland and Walker the second Tuesday of each month 7 p.m. til 9:00 p.m. for the monthly meetings (open to the public). See what we're about... find out how you can be a part...

It all begins with a song...

Who I'd like to meet:

ALL LOCAL AREA SONGWRITERS!!!

MUSICIANS, EDUCATORS, MUSIC INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS, STUDENTS AND THOSE LOOKING TO BUILD A STRONG LOCAL SONGWRITERS NETWORK!!!!

MSA WELCOMES ALL MUSICAL GENRES AND EXPERIENCE LEVELS!!!

    I know right?…Some things I treasure.
And through this comment you can tell.
But for some of you; we never met.
    Only here through Myspace.
And from what you could tell...
    Answer something for me?

    Lastly a question in general.
For those that make me wonder.
Wonder if it's real, fake or phony.
Either way. I'm real. I'll post it. lol

    However,
I still hold that letter when you asked:

NOVEMBER 10th MSA MEETING THIS TUESDAY AT OTHERLANDS COFFEE BAR!!!

FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!!
MSA WELCOMES ALL MUSICAL GENRES AND EXPERIENCE LEVELS!!!

5PM TIL 6PM IS THE MSA/OTHERLANDS NETWORKING HAPPY HOUR!!!
THIS IS A TIME FOR MEMBERS & FRIENDS TO UNWIND WITH A RELAXING WARM/COLD BEVERAGE AND TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET OTHER SONGWRITERS. MSA HOPES TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE THAT ENCOURAGES FUTURE COLLOBERATIONS BETWEEN SONGWRITERS & MUSICIANS.

6PM TIL 8PM MSA MEETING & SONGWRITER "SONG SHARE"!!!
THE MSA MEETING TYPICALLY BEGINS WITH A LOCAL AREA SONGWRITER AND/OR MUSIC INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVE SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER ADDRESSING THE GROUP ABOUT ANY NUMBERS OF TOPICS PERTAINING TO SONGWRITING AND/OR MUSIC BUSINESS. MSA IS WORKING TO STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN OUR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS AND LOCAL SONGWRITERS/MUSIC INDUSTRY REPRESENTATIVES. IF YOU ARE A SONGWRITER, PUBLISHER, MANAGER, PRODUCER, STUDIO OWNER, MUSICIAN, LABEL, FILM MAKER, RADIO REP ETC. ETC. AND WOULD BE WILLING TO ADDRESS OUR GROUP PLEASE CONTACT (PHILLIP BEASLEY/901-626-4127).

THEN, AFTER A VERY SHORT BREAK WE MOVE RIGHT INTO OUR "SONG SHARE" SEGMENT. OUR MSA "SONG SHARE" IS MUCH LIKE A (12) STEP PROGRAM FOR SONGWRITERS WHERE EACH SESSION BEGINS WITH "HI I'M _______ AND I'M A SONGWRITER". MEMBERS & FRIENDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SHARE FINISHED AND/OR UNFINISHED WORKS AND IF DESIRED GET REACTIVE FEEDBACK FROM AN AUDIANCE OF THEIR PEERS. ALL FEEDBACK IS HONEST AND CONSIDERATE. WE ENCOURAGE LYRIC SHEETS TO SHARE BUT IT IS NOT REQUIRED.

*AMPLIFIER, MIC AND CD PLAYER PROVIDED!!! BRING YOUR INSTRUMENT, CD AND/OR DEMO TO SHARE DURING THE SONG SHARE.

    Here’s some exciting news.

Some of the most requested topics from the members of the Memphis Music Resource Center have to do with legal issues. For almost two years we researched this area – took trips to New Orleans and Nashville to study their programs and meet with a number of interested parties in Memphis. It looks like it is about to become a reality.

What started as a legal clinic for the Memphis Music Resource Center has grown into an idea for an organization to serve ALL Memphis area artists and arts organization with legal education and low cost or no cost legal services.

A group representing the Memphis Music Foundation, Memphis Area Legal Services and a number of local attorneys and organizations has developed a frame work for the Memphis/Mid-South Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (working name).

We’d like for you to come to an organizational meeting on Tuesday – October 27 to hear the current plan and to help us shape and form the MMVLA. We want and need your involvement in this collaboration.

Your invitation is attached – please feel free to pass it along to anyone else you think might be interested in coming – and send me your RSVP as soon as possible. You are welcome to send a representative. I’ll send you directions to the Memphis Music resource Center when I get your RSVP.

Thanks for the add! Good to have you as a friend! Maybe later we can get you as a music supporter, and ultimately a true fan! We hope to see more of you; possibly the next show we have. Check out the music and let us know what you think. Its always good to have a solid opinion. Until then, Chase the dream not the
